Do Pontiac shaker hoods actually increase power?

    I was thinking about plumbing a hose from the AC box for cold air induction. But then I realized I would have to put my ac compressor and condenser back into the car.

    '69 Hurst Olds had them about a foot back from the hood leading edge. There was also a factory set up that had scoops under the front bumper, the W-30 option if memory serves.

    I think 67 or 69.. the Hurst olds comes to mind. The scoops were at the very front.

    My 69 455/HO Hurst Olds (mid restoration) had some nice we called them "mailbox" hood scoops but my now deseased friends Hemi Dart had me beat size wise but the Hurst was sealed up nicer to direct the flow. I loved the Pontiac Shaker hoods but just think they were more of a "WOW factor as many other brands including ours (69-72)were. The 68 Buick ram-air system (over counter)that drew air forced down into the actual cowl area induction fed from the windshield then through a hole cut through the firewall and another hole in the back of the air cleaner and mated together with a rubber "accordian " design was probably the best IMHO until Buick stopped making them.     Along with what Fritzee posted, I can agree with Jason on the Challenger T/A scoop working and I would think the '68 GT500 would be the same. The Cyclones from the mid '60s for sure, and the Boss '9. I know the old tear drops on the '62-'65 Ford race cars let heat out (the ram air came from having the inside headlights removed and hoses fed to the airbox), and those teardrops are in a similar area to the Pontiac Shaker......Oh, and I'm sure the Firebird Formulas worked. Pretty much anything thats at the edge of the hood or cramming itself into the windstream instead of keeping itself out of it.

    The Formula scoops probably worked way better than the shaker...

    On the surface of a car is a 1", slow moving layer of air called the boundary layer. You can actually feel it with your hand while your driving. Any scoop that can get out of that layer and into the faster moving air is going to work

    When I was mocking up my EFI to fit I ran out of room with no space left for a filter box or just an air filter even. Well I scratched my head for awhile. I found an extendable, flexible hose at our local O'Reilly's and ran that from the Mafs to the panel behind the headlights ( the panel that the headlights fasten to) it curves and goes over to the radiator. I cut a hole in the panel welded on an exhaust fitting. Attached the flexible hose to the backside and a K&N cone shaped air filter on the outside. Now my air filter sits right behind the grill, but off to the side.

    When we get forest fires here, they'll lay a nice dusting layer of ash down on your car. It's pretty cool to take them down the interstate and see where ash is stuck and where it's blown off. A real life show and tell of your car's aerodynamics! The very front of the roof just behind the windshield on my Mach 1 will be clean, and where it starts tapering/angling down will be covered in ash all the way back to the spoiler, which will be clean on top but underneath it will be as dirty as when I set off. I don't know if the spoiler actually "works", but the wind does hit it and not the whole back half of the car.
