    Hi,

Was lookin to buff up some old paint and was told by a "brain" that I should start out by washing it and then doing a total body wetsand before I do anything else..Is this right or possible? Or just a really bad idea?

Sounds like a really bad idea. Depends on what the problem is with the paint. If I was going to wet sand, I would try a very small spot first and make sure you aren't damaging the paint. Do you know if the paint is enamel or lacquer? Clear coat or no clear coat? You can seriously harm your paint by wet sanding if you aren't careful!

wet sanding old paint isnt recommended,it gets thin as it oxidizes so you take a chance in sanding it off even before you hit it with a buffer. Sanding scratches are harder to get out on cured paint anyway.Hit some spots with the buffer and see what happens :TU:

Try just the buffer first. If that doesn't bring the shine back, you can wet sand with 1500, or better yet, 2000 grit paper. I like to cut 6" disks out of the paper, glue it on to my DA sander, and hit those flat areas. I'll save alot of time that way. Just stay away from the edges! And yes, do it wet.
Most every paint job will have some orange peel.....you don't want to sand past the point where the orange peel is gone....after that point, you run the risk of sanding thru the paint.
Some paint jobs can't be saved.....I once spent DAYS buffing out the faded paint on my red '66 GS.....it looked absolutely fantastic!  until it sat in the sun for a few days....then the paint just .....went. :eek2: Had that happen on two cars. weird. When the paint is gone, it's gone.... :ball:
