I know it's playing dirty, but I'm sick of being outbid at the last minute just because I have a phone modem...........I want to try using one of these services and I'm looking for some feedback.........has anybody tried this? (my bad :Brow: )

Do what you've got to do.

My last two snipes were with 7 seconds and 3 seconds left... I must be stopped! :Brow:

Yes, they work well. I have a Corvette buddy that uses one all the time for parts that he MUST have. The only time he has lost an auction with this service has been when his maximum bid he set at the snyper site was not good enough and the winning bid exceeded his maximum. Rarely has this happened. He has said to make SURE that you have a maximum price set in the snyper bid service otherwise the system will bid until you win. If someone else has a snyper system also bidding that item will get VERY EXPENSIVE!

I have never used this service. In 5 years I have only purchased one item on EBAY so this service has no value to me. I have sold about 40 items but only purchased 1. My comments stated in the paragraph above are based upon my friends experiences as told to me, not my experience. My friend has positive, 100% feedback rating of over "900", so he is NOT an Ebay newby!

I was more afraid of it being against ebay's rules. I have not sold anything there yet and have worked hard at my 100% feedback rating.....it'd really suck to get thrown out for that. :ball: I think the bad thing about these is what happens when everyone gets this service?

  6. Joe, it's more common than you think. I don't use a sniping service, but I also have never needed a part that bad.

If you think about it, what is the difference between staying up to 3 AM to snipe or just buying a computer program so you can sleep through it and let the computer do the work?

    Just automation at its best.

I don't think this is against eBay's rules, and if it was, they don't mess with feedback (only trading partners do) so using a snipe should have no ill effect on your feedback. :beer

As far as ebay is concerned, it's you bidding at the last second. The only way they could really figure it out is if they compared ip's and that would be *waaaaaay* too much work for them and they would lose quite a bit of money just to kick a few people off.

I have 100% Auction WINS, and usually win the auctions within 3 seconds, and by only $.50 or $1.00 more! :eek2:

It's not so much that sniping "isn't fair", it just "isn't fair" to Other People who don't know HOW to be a (successful) sniper, on Ebay! :Smarty:

You have to EARN the title of "Sniper", it's not just something you do, "occasionally". :bglasses: :TU: :blast:

As far as "automation", it doesn't have a CHANCE, as long as YOUR "REFLEXES" are FASTER! :Smarty: :Brow:

i may get some rude emails again over this subject but, there is nothing wrong about sniping. everyone is under the same rules, so any bid is fair. ebay doesnt mind at all if you use a sniper service, or if you just wait until the clock is down to 7 or even 2 seconds. i often snipe items, usually i win. sometimes i raise an item by $ 100.00 and still dont outbid a high earlier proxy. highest bid wins, it might be the first one placed, might be the last one placed, could be one placed at any time during the auction.

one thing about ebays bid increments is, since most auctions are won by a whole bid increment, we never know how much the winner has bid. i have entered bids that were for far more than the amount i won the item for. i have entered bids over $ 200.00 before, only to win the auction for about $ 30.00

some people want ebay to use auction extensions because they think their item would sell for more, nothing could be further from the truth. AE's would cost sellers money.

bid once, bid late, bid your max.

I think I've missed more items because I forgot to place that last minute bid or was not home to use my computer. The fact a second party is doing the job for me makes it a whole lot easier........I can sit back and relax. And if I lose b/c my max bid was too low, so what, I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than that anyway or else I'd have placed a higher max bid in the first place. :bglasses:

yep, a snipe for 4.99 that ends .000000001 seconds before the end of auction still loses to a bid of 5.00 placed 6-days before the auction ends.

Bid what you are willing to pay and see what happens. The only greed you are battling is your own. I think that is what makes people the most angry. You cheat yourself by trying to save a buck by not bidding what you were willing to pay in the first place.

Exactly! That is the whole point of an asynchronous auction!

Rats. I said I would keep my mouth shut on this, but here I go again.

    Gonna go with Michael......

I would get cable or dsl, and then 'babysit' the auction if you can at the time it will be ending. You may still lose but if your on the web alot like I am, the money I spend on cable is nothing compared to the time I save having a faster service...

    my 2 cents,

Joe-I've sniped a few times, but usually more by accident when first signing on and seeing something. 5-6 years ago just a search for 'Buick' netted 500 hits-now what is it? and there are that many more bidders these days, too.
If winning ebay auctions is important, you probably do need the high speed connection and/or use a bidding service. When I see something, I just bid- don't win much anymore as there are people out there willing to pay way more. I think winning on ebay can get to be as compulsive to some as drink/drugs/gambling, ect- I like buying/selling in the Buick community rather than ebay-and thanks to you I have a pretty nice running qjet by the way!

I'm glad that carb worked out well for you......after seeing how hard those are to find, I prolly could have gotten more for it on evilbay, but it was more satisfying to sell it to a fellow board member who really needed it and I figured it wouldn't get re-sold for more money. Enjoy! :beer
