Is there an acceptable amount of up and down movement on a distributor shaft. I know there are shims/washers that can be installed on the shaft between the gear and the housing to reduce this movement. But what movement is too much? As always, thanks in advance.

    Hi Len,

You want to shim for .005-.007" up-n-down play.

    Hope this helps...:)

Most definitely check with the distributor AND the oil pump installed. Jay

I remember Dave Ray(Ignitionman) commenting on this. He recommended .015 I believe. Too loose isn't nearly as bad as too tight. I don't know about .005-.007. I know I have seen that in the Dove book.

We discussed this spec before and Jim Weise said .O15 inch. Dove's book does say the smaller number.

    Hi Guys,

So..what about "spark-scatter" as the distributor gear is "allowed" to "ride" up the cam gear an extra degree or two because of the extra clearance?:Do No:

This is what I've used for years but I will most certainly not claim to know all so I'm definately up for additional education. :Smarty:

I do agree that you would probably need more clearance IF you are using the old HP/HV pump.

    Thanks everyone..:TU:

I recall Dave said too loose is a problem

If you are using points, because it will not give you a consistent gap.:Do No:

Hummm, lots of different opinions. That's what makes this board great. Big John provided me with a few shims, I'll go that route and set for around 7 thousands and see where that gets me. Thanks to all as always.
