    Hey,
My '65 300 has a stock appearing distributor (haven't checked the numbers) with a Unilite module. With the distributor in the car, it seems to have quite a bit of up and down play. It has no side to side play (in the car). I've heard there is a way to shim up the distributor, but I guess I never paid much attention...can anyone shed any light on this? How much play should it have and how do I shim it if I can? Thanks...

    Aaron,
I forget what the play should be, but adjusting it is done by adding shims under the gear. The shims are available from Jegs or Sumitt, and I think GM even has a kit.

Distributor end play limit = .005-.007"

    Jim,
That's what I always thought, after reading it in the "Guide to Buick GS" performance and restorations tips. I posted that awhile back (when the ignitionman was still on board) in response to a question. Dave posted back that he sets them up looser, somewhere around .015, if I remember correctly. Not sure which is right. Anybody know for sure:confused:

Almost positive Dave said to shoot for .012"-.015".:TU:

OK, great...now do I have to remove the gear to shim it? I'm not too familiar with the distributor yet...I haven't had it out of the car. Thanks for all the answers!

Probably should keep the orientation of the gear to the shaft the same - when you take it off.

Should just need a skinny punch to drive out the roll pin.

Is there anything I should be wary of when driving the roll pin back in? Any precautions I should take to ensure it doesn't come back out???

Since the end play is a mechanical issure that may affect your cam I would take Dr Weise's advice. He is an engine builder. An engine builder would have to deal with the an end play miscue on a Buick.

The .005 - .007" figure is From Dove's Book "Guide to Buick Gran Sports" ( 1988) page 62. I posed the question to Dr Weise and he would set it at .010- .020" I would follow an experienced engine builder's lead over the Dove book.

What do you mean with this ?
The gear will be att the same distance from the cam at all time. timing gear to cam gear play is constant.

    i'm not geting it?

    I'm not getting it? :spank:
    Metal contamination?
Pleas explain how the gear play will make this contamination!
Do you mean that with to large end play the gear moves up and down creating a uneven wear pattern on the cam gear?
wich will wear the gears out in a short time? :Do No:
