I need to reinstall my distributor , and the engine was moved while it was out. So I want to reinstall, I followed all instructions in the shop manual but I can not get the engine restarted.

Is the motor always at TDC when the timing mark matches to 0? becuase I lined it up and dropped in the ditributor with the rotor pointing to the number one cylynder, and I can not get the car restarted so I can use a timing light.

I did mark distributor position befor I pulled it and I have that marked also. turns over and some vapor comes out of the carb, but it does not start.

    Did I do something wrong?

    Any suggestions?

    John,

You have to ascertain where the engine is, and when it wants to fire on number 1.. to do this..

Remove number 1 spark plug, and hold your finger over the hole while a assistant cranks the engine.. just have him bump it over, don't spin it too fast.

You will feel and hear the compression..

Then look at the timing marks, and line them up at zero if required.. they typically will have gone past.. you may have to turn the engine back a bit.. (counterclockwise as viewed from the front)- it depends on how fast it's spinning when you feel the compression and tell your assistant to stop..

Remember, it's a 4 cycle engine, and the timing marks line up at #1 and again at number 6 firing positions.

You probably have it in 180* off.. so your trying to fire number one plug when number 6 cylinder is in the firing position.

    Good luck

    JW

FYI, I did not mark rotor postion, just distributor location.

    Jim,

Hey thanks, I thought it was always TDC when the marks line up, I guess I was wrong. I bet that is the issue. Mystery Solved??

    Thanks,
