My 65 GS was backfiring through the exhaust on full throttle forced downshifts. Also power seemed flat after downshift.

Checked the timing, it was at 2 1/2 BTDC. Advanced timing to 12 BTDC- no more backfire and power was very good-pulled hard. Checked vacuum advance and it is working. Mechanical advance seems weak(got more degrees of advance out of the vacuum advance than through weights).
I checked the weights and they did not move easily due to surface rust,so I lubed them. Now the weights move easily but the springs do NOT pull the weights back in very fast.

I don't thing this is correct. I also have a exhaust "sputter" now, almost sounds like a slight miss out of both tailpipes. Car runs real good, idle is just a tad rougher. Think I need new springs?? Anyone have any idea on where to get factory correct springs?

    Thanks
