I`m thinking of disconnecting and pulling off my smog pump and tubes off my`66 and putting them in a box and store them in my basement,my question is when i loosen the tubes off the head do they just pop right out?is there more to it?

    Thanks

    George:
I have done this to mine and the biggest problem is finding something to plug the holes with where the tubes screwed into the heads. If you use a tubing cutter on the tubes right above the b nuts you can solder or braze them close and then reuse them to plug the holes. I have never looked for a plug with that odd ball thread, so I don't know if they are available or not.
Once the tubes are off you will find that there are tubes that run thru the exhaust ports. These can be removed, but most often the exhaust manifold will have to be removed inorder to get a grip on them sufficient to force them out. If some one was nice on the last assembly and used anti sieze then they might just slide out. Other wise they can be miserable.

Carbon build up will be holding the tubes.

The smog (E suffix) heads are drilled/tapped 1/2-13 for the air tube fittings. I've never had any trouble getting them loose or plugging the holes with short bolts-
