I have a Fuju FinePix E550 and I just bought a 1 MB picture card for it.

I've taken a couple of test pics and some short test video but when I insert the card into the reader, I get a pop-up message which reads:

The disk in drive E is not formatted. Do you want to format it now? Yes or No. So of course, I click yes....

I've never had to format any of the other picture cards I've bought over the last few years...what gives??

Then, another pop-up box opens with what appears to be the specs ( :Do No: ) of the card and the option to "quick format" and "enable compression".

I click on "quick format" and then another pop-up box tells me the disk is "write protected".

What the hell is that?? It's brand new!!!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Let's see here. First off, I think it's a 1 GB card Not a 1MB card. Sometimes Cards do need to be formatted I wouldn't worry about that. Looking at the Fujifilm website, The e550 might only support cards up to 512 megs, not sure if that would make a difference. Don't XD cards have a little tab on them to write protect them like old floppy disks? That could be the problem there regarding that issue.

That's all I know about that.

When you say car reader do you mean the camera, printer, computer or a separate reader?
I would guess it's a compatibility issue unless of course the card is designed for the device. I thought the xD cards were an Olympus panorama thing but I don't know for sure.

Xd is supported witht he Fuji, It was developed by Fuji and Olympus (and a couple others) as a standard for digital cameras.

After an hour and a half, on the phone with Fuji's tech guy, turns out I had to download drivers to support my Image Memory Card Reader...

What a pain in the :moonu: :moonu:

However, it works....so tell me, why the hell don't these digital imaging companies TELL you you're going to need to download a bunch of new stuff when you buy (what you thought was) a simple new memory card???

    I mean, C'MON???

If they tell you, then you might not buy it because it won't be "easy." Well, you certainly will, as you know how easy it is to download a driver - but many people wouldn't.

Sometimes the companies just expect windoze to automatically download the driver for you - foolishly thinking plug and play will actually work, LOL. We've had problems with USB flash drives - windoze can't find the driver. The driver will be on the machine, but I'll have to physically tell it where to look for a couple files before it will work. Go figure.

I once bought a "Plug and Play" modem that had terse directions, and no phone support. The index card said support could be had from the website or email - and I couldn't get it working. Now how am I supposed to get support if I can't get the modem working?

So it was the card reader and not the camera? That makes sense. I missed that part in the original post. Is the card reader a fujifilm product? I have a card reader I never use it. I just use the camera and the USB cable it came with.

I bought the little Fuji like yours for my work... Been a good little camera for the most part but the lens is awfully small (camera is awfully small) and you need to be watchful of the light levels. Otherwise with a bit of care it takes great photos. You may find that it's easier to just plug the camera into the USB port. The camera supports USB2 and transferring pics through the USB is fast and easy.

    good luck

Yeah, it was the reader. I had to visit "home.fujifilm.com" and download drivers JUST so this new 1 GB "type M" card could be used with my memory card reader. That's what the actual drivers were for, so the "type M" card would would with my reader....go figure.... :Do No:

Everything is Fuji. Camera, picture card, reader....it's working fine now but what a pain in the a$* it was getting it there.

I suggest that if anyone buys a new camera, media card or card reader, (or a new printer that might read your picture card) go to that particular company's website and look for any new drivers you might need....

    This SUCKED!!!!
