I picked up a rear end assembly, complete drum to drum, for my 69 Chevelle convertible project. It was free, I just had to drag it out of the guy's back yard. He said it was a 4.10 posi. It had been sitting for 15 years in the same place and he wanted it gone. I got it home, opened it up, looks good inside. Definitely a limited slip. The rear cover looks like someone took a bite out of each edge, which from what I gather means it's a BOP 8.2 (or possibly an 8.5 if it's a later version). It's probably not a 4.10 unless the gears have been changed, stock would have been like a 3.91 or something close. There are no codes in the usual location on the axle tube. The casting # in the housing is 3793235 or 8793235. Hard to tell on that first #. On the other side of the casting is CFD. I think it might be from a 1970 Olds. The guy mentioned he thought it came from a W30 car.
casting number is 9793235 It is a Nodular Pontiac 10 bolt 8.2 housing. Gear code is on the axle tube driver side rear 2 letter code like ZH XH etc. will be a 68 69 date.
OK, here are some pictures. The casting number appears to be 9793235. I always have trouble with those. It usually takes me three or four tries
There are no numbers on the tube. From what I can find on some Pontiac fora, it's a 1968. I came in 3.55, 3.90 and 4.33. This one is a 3.55.
LOOK FOR THE ZH IT WILL BE ON THE BACK OF THE TUBE BETWEEN THE SPRING PERCH AND THE CAST CENTER SECTION. LOOKS LIKE A CLEAN HOUSING ...IT SHOULD BE THERE. jIM crap caps is on again...sorry. o No: Its a good rear. keep it or sell it to a pntiac guy that needs a 'N' Housing Nodular See the cast in 'N' on the pinion snout.
