Differences in 70 Skylark hoods??

Question: Was there a difference in the hoods they put on some skylarks compaired to the usual hood. I don't mean gs hood versus skylark, I mean the trim on the front of the hood is totally different. Is this a different trim piece attached to the same hood or a different hood lip than most? I wish I had a picture to post to show what I mean.

All this comes about because I saw a 70 skylark today that had an unusual looking front hood and it also had B U I C K spelled across the top of the front of the hood and the trishield in the middle of the grille, I also had never seen this. Someone tell me, is this factory?

    Chris,
I own all 3 years of '70, '71 and '72 Skylarks AND GS's. There IS a difference between ALL of the hoods. The one that you saw sounds like it is a !'70! SKYLARK hood. The front lip is a little more "flat" rather than coming out to a "point" on a Skylark hood, compared to a GS hood. I should take some pictures of all the hoods to SHOW the difference between ALL of the hoods, as this is always an ongoing and confusing subject. The '70-'72 hoods will FIT on the cars, but ARE different in APPEARANCE, with the way they line up with the headlight bezels.:TU:

The best way to explain it is probably like this:
There are ONLY !6! types of '70-'72 Hoods:
    '70 SKYLARK hood (flat hood)
'70 GS hood (Ram Air scoops)
    '71 SKYLARK hood (flat hood)
'71 GS hood (Ram Air scoops)
    '72 SKYLARK hood (flat hood)
'72 GS hood (Ram Air scoops)

I'll try to get pictures of ALL the hoods, to show and explain the differences between them, so guys know what they have or what they need for their cars!:TU:

    70 Skylark Hood

The only skylark hood i've ever saw with BUICK letters on it was a `70.
1972 is the the only year i have seen the tri-shield emblem on,i've seen that on both Skylark and GS.
I've never seen a combo of both the BUICK letters and the tri-shield emblem together though.......

I'll second...er, third that the '70 has "Buick" on the nose. mine did, at least until, I, um, smashed the living crap out of it against a van. Pardon me whilst I go cry

    :ball:

but that was years ago. My GS hood fits a little funky at the bezels and the '70 chrome I use on the front mis-aligns ever so slightly, but I paid 600 bucks for the damn thing so i ain't complaining.

Scott, I would be interested in knowing the differences also. This is how I had figured it:

    '70 Skylark hood - Flat nose, "B U I C K" lettering, unique trim

'71-72 Skylark hood - pointed nose, different trim/emblems (same sheet metal though

'70-72 GS hood - Same sheet metal, different nose trims and bolt on stuff like pot metal scoop inserts (although 70 & 72 are the same insert)

I would definately like to know if there is a difference between the GS hoods as far as sheet metal goes...

    gotbuick What, me worry?

Add to that the window squirters were different in 70 only.

Most if not all 71-72 Skylark and GS hoods had and underhood spring attatched to them. It came down on the pass. side against the metal radiator cover.

    U mean this B U I C K lettering?

this is on my 70 convertable custom non GS

I wonder if this is part of the same trim set that includes a chrome strip along the edge of the door.(latch edge) I thought this was something the old guy added to his car like some people do now, but I noticed in the Fisher Body manual that this was a trim style.

That's the stuff I'm talking about :bglasses: . So, what are the differences in the window squirters? Learn something new every day...

    gotbuick What, me worry?

70 hoods had single hole squirters, 71-72 hoods had a twin hole design. :)

Nate: What month is your 70 Skylark? I'll throw out a guess it was built after the first 3-4 months of production.:Comp:

Thanks a lot Jerry, that's something I never would have known had you not said something. Now I need to check both of my cars for the correct window washers (and keep my eye out for them in junkyards). :beer

Gonna check to see if you have the correct WINDOW SQUITERS...
I have judged concours at the G$ Nats with Duane and Sid Meyer and can't recall that we ever checked to see if those were correct.:puzzled:
We gave one fellow a hard time about his check valve on his power booster (and he know who he is... ).
Ok, now I have to look at mine..... :eek2:
