Is there a difference between different year BOP 8.2 Ring and Pinion gears?

Jim (monzaz) here on the board has been nice enough to reply to my search for a set of used 3.23 BOP gears, but we are trying to know that they will fit? Are they all the same? Is there any marking on the gears that would let us know? I think I read somewhere that the pinion diameter changed??? How can we be sure on this before I buy these gears and have to pay shipping back and forth???

I have my original carrier out from my 67 that I can look at to verify anything if that helps.

    Thanks for any help,

The 8.2 ring & pinion that will fit in an original '64-67 Buick A-body 10 bolt rear is also known as the 8.2 BOP... a term I really don't like to use... very confusing. This style ring & pinion was used from '64 through '69 in Pontiac 8.2 10 bolts & in Buick 8.2 10 bolts mfg for the '64-67 models. Olds often used the Buick 8.2 as well at least up through mid '67 models. At that time, Olds introduced the type "O" rearend (10 bolt ring gear 12 bolt cover). This style 10 bolt was used through the 70 model in most Olds intermediates.

For 1970 model PONTIAC 8.2 10 bolts, the ring gear attaching bolts changed to larger diam & LH thread & As a result the '70-72 Pontiac 8.2 10 bolts also use carrier which has 1/16" larger diam holes. Searching for a nice used early Pontiac 8.2 10 bolt 3.23 gearset, I would ck the date inscribed on the gearset along with the ring gear bolt threads. When I get back home, will retrieve the gearset numbers I do have in records & post them. BTW, am currently out of nice used 3.23 Pontiac gearsets, usually have a waiting list for 3.23's & 3.36's.

    Got Posi?
