Did the repair show do me a favor or "do me a favor" on my drums?

  1. Had the front drums turned on my Wildcat a few weeks ago by a local shop. Take the tires off tonight and find out the three rivets that have held the drum to the hub for 41 years were ground off by the shop. Please chime in if this was in some way related to them turning the drum. I would hate to think they cut off the rivets because they were too dumb to pull off the dust cap and remove the nut. Or maybe just lazy? I've had these drums off plenty of times in the last month, so I know they had no problem coming off.

Here is what a similar drum's rivets would have looked like before the favor (this drum is a lot cleaner than mine):

    Wtf?

Over the years I have had several sets of these turned and NEVER did the shop have to seperate the drum from the hub!
    That's B.S.! [IMG]

It's quite obvious whoever worked on it didn't know what they were doing.

You can mount the drum either with the hub or without. Looks like the mechanic thought it might be easier to mount it without the hub. That way he wouldnt have to deal with messy bearings and grease. Maybe wreck the grease seal that may or may not be available anymore. Probably didnt even occur to him that you would have a problem with that. He's used to dealing with customers that drive "appliances" rather than cars. Most people dont care how its done as long as the problem they brought it in for is gone. Doesnt matter how detailed you make your explaination of what and how you want something done. If your not there over the guys shoulder he wont do it exactly the way you want.

dale is right, the drum and hub should be machined without separating. the grease seals are easy to obtain.

Have heard that seperating the drum and hub can be quite the chore. Its possible to crack the drum. I'd have a good look.

  7. I'll be heading down to the shop on Saturday and calmly ask for an explanation. They better tell me their drum turning machine was not compatible with the hub.

They turned the drums for me and got the bad shake out, but we had communications problems (could never get the guy working on my brakes on the phone) and I even dropped off the factory service manual with the car.

You should be able to rivet the drums back to the hubs. Have a cost for that on paper should there be an argument.
