Has anyone heard anything good or bad about Detroit Truetrac posi units? they are a gear driven design instead of plates and cones. but it's not quite a "Locker" differental.

for the 8.5" 10-bolt in the later 89-96 B-body cars the Impala SS guys have been known to break them on hard launchs especially with the 6-spd conversions. The Torsen T2 and T2R enjoy slightly greater popularity as being more durable and providing much of the same locking characteristics. These are heavy cars with lots of power though and the T56 conversion puts a lot of shock to the unit on a clutch dump. The automatic cars tend to do better on them but a N2O hit on a transbrake launch will still take its toll. One of the more popular differentials that is still a tradiational posi is the 800lb Eaton Posi that is rebuildable.
Both the Tru-Trac and the Torsen will not fully lock and will open up at a torque level designed into the unit, however this is a good thing in almost all cases as when a single wheel is spinning the torque split drops to near 0 and the unit locks, its when you are going around the corner with grip that you exceed the nessicary torque levels to open up. If you want a locker that will open up under no power corners get a Power-trax.

hmm... it maybe I should give some more info. building an approx 450-500 hp engine.. full street trim convertible (3800-3900 lbs) with low 3 gears. I'm looking at either a standard Eaton unit and the Truetrac. this car will mostly be used on the street. It will aslo have a SP trans 1200 low stall 3000 high stall

    Building a '71-72 8.5 A-body rear, go with a new 30 spline Eaton carrier & Moser axles.

    Got posi?

If the car is mostly street bound I would not worry too much make the choice you want they both are good. I have a detroit locker here too NEW if you would like something like that... :3gears: I can price you out the other stuff too if you need. Jim jdrace.com
