Title says it all, asking for a friend, if he puts a Demon carb on his 455 powered edelbrock performer 72 GS will he:

    1) be able to put on stock cleaner for shows

    2) run an open element cleaner without hood clearance problems?? Does he need a drop base and how much??

    3) Have throttle cable issues??

    thanks
    Tim

I believe that with an Edelbrock intake, he will be OK. I was able to run my factory air cleaner with the Edelbrock. Height is the same as a Holley I believe. With a 3" element, he can use a standard base, which drops about 1" I think.

    For what it's worth....
I have a Demon on a SP1 in our 70GS with a K&N "filter top" air filter. The hood is cutting tiny little grooves in the top of the "filter top" because there really isn't quite enough room.

But since I have an SP1, I guess this doesn't really help you out.

I'm running a holley 950 HP on my SP1. I got a "drop" base from Summit with a 3" element. I still had to trim it to lower it another 3/8" or so and not have that problem of the engine rocking and touching the hood. This did necessitate cutting "windows" in the base as it was now touching the float screws at the front and back float bowls. It's close under there, but it can and does fit.

    I have a K&N 3" with x-treme top on it also.

I have a Holley 850, SP1 intake, and a K&N "filter top" under my stock hood. But, when I bought the K&N 3" with the drop base assembly (from Summit) it was touching or almost touching the underside of the hood and I would not use it. I took a factory original GM drop base that I bought sometime back at a swapmeet for $25.00 and modified it. They have a small cutout where it sits on the carb and a tube on the bottom that I had to eliminate using a Mig and pieces of sheetmetal. Now you can't tell it has been modified. This base drops much lower than the K&N and gives plenty of hood clearance. I also had to refabricate the throttle cable bracket to lower it to clear the base. These GM drop bases were used on Chevelle's and Camaro's in the late 60's, early 70's and are plentiful. Can send pics if you need them. Dennis
