Simple. You do have the lock cylinder retainer clip out, right? Put the flat sheet metal kind of "J" or "L" shaped piece into the end of the lock cylinder, latch the circular spring onto the "J or L", PUT THE LOCK GASKET ON NOW AND THE TRUNK LOCK RETAINER to allow the lock cylinder to go through the larger part of the hole. When you get the lock in final position, you will push the retainer all the way up. The little notch will hold it in place... Guide the straight part of the "J" tip of the lock mechanism (I use a popsickle stick with a groove/ notch cut on the tip, and a groove/ notch cut near the end on one side to steady/ guide the "J" into the lock mechanism. Push the lock assembly flush into the trunk lid, put the lock retainer into the trunk lid slot to grab the cylinder. install either a short phillips screw or pop rivet to hold the retainer. Chevelle/ Monte Carlo parts are the same 70-72. https://www.npdlink.com/product/cyl-and-keys-doors-and-trunk-w-later/112297/7430; https://www.npdlink.com/product/cyl-and-keys-console-glove-box-and-trunk/142477/7432 ( Trunk lock already has spring on these. Does NOT have correct cylinder retainer.
THIS is the correct retainer: https://www.npdlink.com/product/retainer-deck-lid-trunk-lid-cylinder-repro/109985?backurl=search/products?search_terms=trunk%2Block%2Bretainer&top_parent=8&year=
Also, here is the lock spring. https://www.npdlink.com/product/spring-deck-lid-trunk-lid-lock-cylinder/204467?backurl=search/products?search_terms=trunk%2Block%2Bretainer&top_parent=8&year=
    And the "J/ L" https://www.npdlink.com/product/sha...ms=trunk%2Block%2Bretainer&top_parent=8&year=

You gotta push it up and in at the same time,..if the paint is kinda thick around the lock it will be a little tight
