Has anyone out there tried destroking one of these 350 motors........maybe using a 364 or 300 crank which has a 3.4 stroke.....just curious. It would seem like a decent way to squeeze some more HP and RPM out of em at the price of tourqe.

Yea that sounds neat, RPMs can make up for torque when your still revin out 2nd and the other guy is in third.

Some people wonder why I like my Firebird so much being that its just a puny 2.8 With my T-5 and them crazy RPMs its more fun than ever. The 2.8 is so much like a bike engine and not a car on how well and fast it rev's

But many times I have stood back and looked and said hmmm

    2.8 T5 in the buick
    350x th350 in the bird

    ?????

I am an olds, buick, pontiac nut with a touch of dodge.

First car was a 76 olds 350 rocket white with red top and insides.

I think it would be neat too, but I don't think it's worth the trouble.
I guess you would have to see if the benefits of the 350 (better parts availability, better heads ?) outweigh the cost of custom pistons, which would be relatively tall (heavy), and bearing spacers as I believe the 300 has smaller mains.
Keep an eye on guys like greg and pinhead64us; it might be more worthwhile to just start with a 300 and save a few pounds.

You could punch a 300 out to take a 350 piston and that would be like destroking it but then theres the head flow thing. Or what about a 300 crank in a 350??. JUst some food for thought:grin:

PS might even be cool to have in a MG or Datsun Z and some windy hills

I thought it was a pretty cool idea....wondered if anyone had done it.........

What sizes are the mains on a 300 crank vs. a 350.

Might even be able to use BB Chev rods to make up for this piston being do far down.

I think this this would be a pretty bad little race motor to run in a late 70's apollo.

Huh huh huh.......a REAL buick 305

The Buick 350 has a BETTER rod / stroke ratio than the 350 Chevy. Not by a lot, but it is better because the 350 Buicks have fairly long rods.

We can buzz to 6,000 RPM without difficulty. Isn't that enough? I'd hate to be down on the cubes, but a destroke would be different, I agree.

I agree, no need. I spun mine up to 6k twice, and it pulls hard up there. That's with a mild cam and headwork. I've got a stock bottom end, so I don't want to press my luck on the R's, so my rev limiter is set to 5600 now. After I rebuild it, I'll have a little more fun.
I'm sure with the right setup you could get a stock stroke 350 up to 7k.

these things will seriously run at 6k rpm??!!! i'd be terrified of windowing it..

makes the 6000 rpm of my honda not seem so high.

makes me want to find a cheap tach to put in my car to see where its at. on the shift points

My 350 and Andy's(sb buick) both have very similar cams and yes they will rev to 6000 rpm's with ease. Mine has seen 7000 but only once and by accident at that. That was with stock 1970 rod bolts, rods and crank. Although I have recently(in october) pulled it out for a 462 swap I still have the motor and its awaiting the swap into its third car now. I've had this 350 since about 1980 and I just cant seem to kill it. Maybe I should'nt have said that:Dou:

    Right on, David!

My RPM limiter on my MSD 6AL box was SET at 6K.

I have hit that rpm more times than I can remember. Just build your engine right! The only problem I ever had was a broken valve spring, which luckily popped at a MUCH Lower RPM :)

I have cap screw rods, beams polished, shotpeened, ARP bolts, magnafluxed, Crankshaft cross drilled, magnafluxed, high volume oil pump, forged pistons - everything's balanced.

I have even hit 6k with an old, stock engine, but that was only a few times.

    Rock on.

Andy are you gonna do the spring spectacular next month? Its been two or three years now. We really should hang out. We should be bringing four or five buicks this year.

If I had the cash I think it would be pretty cool to sleave a 350 buick (4.00" bore maybe) and run custom pistons. Has anybody tried this?

Not enough room to do that...There is only ~.440 of block between stock 3.800 bore cylinders...If you want to increase the bore to 4.000, then you only have ~.240 between cylinder, which IMO isn't enough room...The liners would need to be "overlapping"(for lack of a better, more correct term) each other to have enough thickness in the liners...Just my opinion...
