PHR has David Vizard's excellent article on exhaust science at:

    Good reading material! :TU:

Sounds like the best system on a street car would be long-tube headers (3.5 inch collectors) with 3.5 inch tubing about 24 inches long dumping straight into 3.5 inch open-chamber mufflers (resonators), then 2.25 or 2.5 pipes going to some quiet mufflers at the back of the car.

Anybody have any experience with the Summit welded chamber-type mufflers?

My pop has them on his big-block powered 56 Chev. They are about like a flowmaster. Just cheaper.

I've got a few of David Vizard's books and they really get into the theory of making HP. I love em for some light reading... :Brow: , but that's just how I am... :pp

"Light reading"...hah! I'm the same way, I love reading about the science and theory behind engines. Think I'm gonna try out his recomendations on my low-octane 455.

Only thing is, the article indicates that for street engines, the "best" header collector length is somewhere between 15 and 50 inches, which is quite a spread. Looknig under my car, looks like I could do about 36 inches without any problems.

But where would an x-pipe fit into his ideas?
