Where is the date code on a 1970 Buick 455? I was told that it can tell you the year of the block or motor by looking at the date code on the engine? I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction in what to look for. Thanks a lot. Brian
The block date code is on the front of the block. If you're looking down at the coil, with your head under the hood, look to the left of the coil on the edge of the block, right behind the timing cover. The casting tells the year, the date code states month and day.
Look at the block, driver's side, behind the power steering pump, if you have one. You should find a 9 digit code starting with a "4". Mine is 41Z109991. Translates into 4=Buick,1=1971,Z=Fremont plant. 109991 is a sequence build number on the car. This number also appears on the VIN tag, the identical last 6 digits if the motor is original to the car. Next car was 109992.
Marco, how do I verify that the month and day of the block match the month and day that the car was made? Ill send you a PM.
Gerry's right! On my GS, my block is cast Nov 11 (going from memory), my body was finished 11D at Fisher, and the car arrived at the selling dealership (invoice date) in Ohio on Dec 24, 1969. There should be a 'reasonable gap' between the pertinent dates.
The date code is cast into the block, right? My 66's do have a 3 digit number stamped near the VIN... it's a 'production code', and does not signify date of manufacture....
Marco, What are the casting codes (for a 1970) and how do they "de-code" to month and day? Also, are cylinder heads coded the same? Thanks Harvey
Its easy Harv "A" = Jan, "B" = Feb......."M" = Dec (there is no "i" used). Yes the heads are the same way. There is a one or two digit number following the letter on the day the part was cast. :bglasses:
Thanks Dan, The "M" had me confused considering it is the 13th letter! My code is "M" and couldn't figure out what that meant! :TU: Harvey
