I am thinking about getting a complete dash wiring harness for my 72 GS. Between aging and years of mucking around, it looks to be a mess. Is there a source that will custom build the harness to match my needs/options or am I best to order from the large vendors like OPG,YO or TPP? Pricey, so I want to do it right. Thanks, Steve

70sgeek drive it like a rental.

M&H might alter a repro harness to suit if provided with good specs but only if they're not under exclusive license to Y1 for their products.

Otherwise you may have to go a more generic route and build your own from a kit...

If you run original type stuff. Like a tach, guages, defrost and cruise, power accessories you can buy a repo harness There is even radio and 8 track harness's out there.

Not too much you can't fix yourself from the dash harness. Get it out on a bench & have a good look at it. Butt sleeve splices where necessary with a heatshrink tube over it. Solder is better if you are comfortable with it.
My engine harness is as new. It wasn't always so great.
There was a meltdown in the original harness before I got the car. Bought another , used, & restored it for under $20.00 & my time.
You can buy the right outer tape on line. Simple job.

Steve, thanks. That sounds like a great project when the dash bezel comes out to be rechromed. Steve

Once you get it out make a list of any connectors you may need, if any. Lamp holders, multi-wire connectors etc.. Should be plenty, plenty here available good used. Always buy with plenty of wire on them. If yours is destroyed use it & splice in a discreet location, also/or connector ends are easy to change.
Correct colours & sizes of wire available most any auto parts store.

If you want a good harness and yours is butchered I suggest fionding a good one or buying from M&H. I cannot count the number of nice cars I have seen burn up because of bad wiring! If its not bad then do as Steve says and restore it. You can do it man! And FYI M&H sells the correct guage and colors for DIY guys

I guess we'll see what it looks like when I get it out. I like the option to save some $$$s but want something that is safe and actually works . Electrical gremlins ar ethe worst ones of all. Steve

I agree. I took my 72 Stage 1 apart and I dug out my wiring harness I am lucky as the wires are soft and pliable and not cut anywhere. I will be reusing mine. I do have a couple wiring harnesses that are nice as I have parted a lot of these cars

I am reinstalling the wiring harness for my 1972 GS 455. Since I did not take the harness out I do not know how many parts there are for the total harness. I have (4) sections.

    Question 1
    Is this the entire harness?

    1. From the fuse block and under the dash.
    2. A very small section with 2 purple wires and 1 pink wire.
    3. A section that connects to the fuse block in the engine compartment and has the voltage regulator and extensions for the side marker lamps.
    4. A section with a 2" wide heavy sheath with an 8 prong connector on one end and it splits on the other end with small connectors maybe for a light on each side.

    Question 2
Is there supposed to be dome light on the interior of a 1972 GS? I don't have one in this new headliner.

    Question 3
Should I replace the bulbs on the wiring harnesses before I install them?

    Thanks for the help.

You really need to get a Chassis Manual. Reproductions available $70-80 US.
Best money you will ever spend on the car.
Very difficult to confirm what you have without seeing it & comparing to the wiring drawings in the manual.
Item 1- sounds like the main dash harness. 2- may be the resistor wire & power to the rear defrost switch. 3- main engine harness, 4- rear harness, fuel tank, tail lights etc..

Dome lights were available in the ceiling or in each rear sail panel, depends on the way it was ordered.

Change all the lamps when you re-install.

I need to reinstall a full wiring harness. Is there any kind of kit that has all the correct straps, clips, screws etc for attaching to the stock areas.

2 purple and 1 pink is neutral safty harness
The harness for the fron engine is seperate from the engine harness. The one with the side marker lites is the headlight harness
The section with the plastic sleeve is the intermediate harness from collumn to the rear of the car. Then it connects to a taillight harness. If you get a new harness from M&H it will have the parts you mentioned clips and so forth. The GS had sail panel lights and those witres are in the intermediate harness and are thick white and orange wires and you can change the lights easily after install. If you need any parts or sections I have them for 71 and 72.

Thanks John, I will check closer and see if I am missing any sections. The lights in the sail panels were installed with the headliner so I am hoping the wire harness for them was installed first. I think they likely were installed since those wires appear to be missing. I am trying to use the harness I have rather than paying out more $$$. Thanks for the help.

Not a problem. Just so you know you canget wiring cheap from St Louis Buick central :beers2: And I ship too. The wires your looking for should be visable under the rear package tray as thats where the factory ran them. I have a couple intermediate harnesses.
