ok here is the deal i just brought a 72 skylark, my first muscle ever and i dont know much about these cars but i my dash lights dont work. the turnsignal arrows work when the lights are on and my turn signals are on but no other lights work on the gauges. how can in fix this? any help is appreciated. thanks Rich also i changed the bulbs and it seems like that wasnt the problem
Try rotating your headlight switch knob, clockwise I think, with the lights on. This is the dimmer for the dash lights. If that doesn't work, check your fuses.
Check to make sure you are getting power to that circuit at the fuse box.Take out the fuse and use a test light on the right prong of the fuse holder with igintion on. I have seen 3 skylarks that vintage which had issues in this same area.
Rich, Hey, keep us posted when you figure this out. I have the same issue with my 70GS and already rulled out the dimmer switch and fuses. I stopped short of taking the gauge cover panel off and pulling a bulb to see if it was still good. My though was if I can be sure that at least one bulb is good they I would know if I fix the issue because I could get it to light. Good Luck! Matt
I once had a similar problem with a 72 Cutlass I used to have. All the switches and fuses were good, but still no dash lights. I pulled the guage cluster and literally every bulb was out. I couldn't believe it, but after replacing them all they worked. Mind you I had just got the car so the previous owner must have let them go one at a time... I doubt they all went at the same time.
I checked the fuse and that seems to be fine, as for power being delivered to that part od the box i have no clue. i also tried rotating the hedlight knob and nothing happens except for when it is turned all the way left the dome lights come on, so i was thinking it could be a bad switch but with the dome lights coming on i really dont know. Thanks again Rich
I have this same issue. I replaced all the fuses and that made the Gas gauge work, but the speedometer still doesnt work (no light). So my next option is to take the guage cluster out and see those bulbs you guys keep talking about.
Lay on your back under the dash(not comfortable). Look up behind the gauges with a small flashlight and twist the bulbs out one at a time. Most have no wires as they ground to the gauges. You have to take lower plastic AC duct out if equipped to see and reach. Also check all grounds. A service manual is essential for wiring schematics and diagrams. Get one. :Smarty: Well worth the money.
