What color is the plastic under the chrome on a dash bezel? My bezel has pretty good chrome except the thin chrome lines. It looks to me as someone in the past has tried to paint it and got paint all over the chrome. Or it could be black plastic coming through where the chrome is gone.

Also, what is the best stuff to remove hard black paint off of one of these things. I don't want to mess up the chrome if it is paint over the chrome.

    Thanks

I believe it is beige-gray-ish, if memory serves

Might want to ask Jim Weise. He restores them and would definately know what works and what doesn't. I would think that a little (I mean not very wet) nail polish remover or lacquer thinner would be ok.

    The plastic was light gray.

Hi Darren, I was thinking about using Q-Tips.

Since the whole dang thing is chromed, you have lots of area on the back to experiment. I'm guessing the chrome is not gonna like any solvent, but I've never tried it...

Of course, if the bezel is still in the car, you don't have this option...

It's out of the car, I was just hopeing to hear that it caused no problems before I experiment.

I may try the paint thinner first. Of coarse there is no black paint to try to remove on the back.

I believe ANY solvent will remove the chrome. Based on experience with newer cars, even windex dulled and cut the shiney chrome on the thin strips of the plastic bezels. I think the black you see is where the chrome is getting thin or already gone.

Well Hell. I got a little nail and was able to scrape off some of the blace in a safe area. This thing would be nice if I could get the paint off. If anyone has a good idea on how to remove what appears to be a hard enamel paint from chromed plastic please let me know.
