    Hey guys,
I started doing my port work form y cylinder heads yesterday. The bits that I am using now are good for the fronts of the ports, however, when it comes time to get deeper within the port, I will need something that will reach further within the port. Does anyone have any info as to where I can find bits for my die grinder that have a longer shaft? If you have done port work, where did you buy your cutting bits? I have some dremel bits, but they are only about 2-3" long :Do No:

    Thanks
    Langston

    Thank you very much Kerry!

Do you use any stones for your port work? I was reading the guide on Standard Abrasives' site, and they dont mention using any burrs, just rotary stones. I know when I did my saturn head (aluminum), I used a carbide burr, then straight on to sanding barrels, then polishing wheels and such.

I used stones for mine all the way through. I ordered mine from MSC industruial. I bought some short shafted ones locally, saving the longer more expensive ones for where they wher needed. I also bought the standard abrasives kit. You will need it for finish work. The burrs will work faster, but if you are inexperianced as I am, they are too aggressive. I just did some light, educated port work where it really counted. Then I used the SA kit for a complete polish. They even give you instructions.

A big tip would be to use a shop vac or other contraption to pull a vacc through the other end of the port and exaust to the outside. This really eliminates a lot of mess. I would say this is a must. There are alot of posts on porting on this site just look around.

I would also hold off on a valve job until you are done porting. this is incase you "slip" (you will).

Edit: are those 76 455 heads you are working on? you may want to consider some 73 and under heads to gain some compression. these will take a different head gasket, as the the water ports changed from early to late. this would give more gain than the port work.

Thanks for the tips Rob :TU: The heads are '72 heads. They will be mated to a '76 block that is to be rebuilt.
