Cutting the heads?

Seeing the story's of Pop Nailhead mods on the Reynolds Buick sight i'm reading he took apart the engines and blue printed them to factory specs and always took .030 off the heads. I'm guessing he also decked the block also.
Wouldn't that much taken off cause issues with the intake lining up with the way its designed flat?

I know Tom T. mentioned the just how much you can but can't remember.

Well .030" milled off the heads or the deck should not be a issue, but you stated that the block was decked also yet you did not state a measurement.
If the decking was only .004" so as to get a parallel and perpendicular surface to Bore the cylinders from then that along with the .030" cut on the heads should be ok also.

Oops:oops: i'm sorry I should of mentioned this is just conversation for now, anyways. I am though thinking about another 66GS though if or when my funds work out and want a compression bump from stock.
I was re reading the Matt from Centerville thread about nailheads and dyno's with Jim Weiss.
Tom T brought up shaving too much off on that thread. Every nailhead build that Pop did had him taking .030 off.

The get to the NHRA spec of 0.010" deck clearance, they would have to cut about 0.040" off of the deck.
The heads were shaved to get to the min 123.7 cc chamber size.

The nailhead intake mounting surface is horizontal, it's not fitting into a 'V' like a 455. The intake will fit, but port and bolt alignment may be off a bit, as would the water manifold mounting.

Is there a definative spec for cutting 401/425 heads vs. CC reduction? I've always made the assumption .005 was a CC.....

My wanting a 66GS could be at minimum a year away. Not that I wouldn't love another 70 GS 455 but even a driver would be out of my price range. Thinking a 66GS driver would be a bit cheaper and always wanted steeper gears in mine back in the day. Problem was it was daily driven alot and my Father liked to drive it too at times and would of hated it with steep gears. "My Father also had a habit of driving with both feet, one foot for the brakes and one for the gas so at times it was a jerky ride lol!".
He went from a 55 Pontiac Star Chief I think? with manual brakes and when he bought his brand new 66 Wildcat he told me he brought it back to the dealer because he thought something was wrong with the brakes as they were too grabby from the power brakes not realizing thats just how they work:D

Would love 3:90's and a ST400 or a transferred M20 wide ratio would be nice if it was a 4 speed.
I know I can't order a used car but PS would be a must and PB also would be nice. Obviously numbers matching motor isn't a issue. 401 or 425 even better.
TA 20 cam and more compression without resorting to new pistons. Should be a decent fun stoplight to stoplight car.
Well till I might get to that point it's all in thought for now..

Well I actually went back and read the Blueprinting article, which says .004 per cc - I wasnt too far off!

It was in the April 66 issue of Hot Rod, and somebody here must have a link to a print of it...

just changing the tulip intake valve to a flat one you can get about 4 less cc per chamber.

They mention the stock exhaust manifolds can be used as make shift header if you expand the manifold and port match it to the heads and ad extentions??
Is the the exhaust port smaller than the head port? That wouldn't work to well..
