Hey guys, My car has recently started cutting out, 200-300 RPMs, every few seconds running down the highway. I can drive it to the track 10 miles, make 3-4 pass and on my way home it starts cutting out. I have change my battery cables, check the MSD box and wiring and cannot find anything. I have ruled out fuel pressure as it stays steady. Any ideas? I am using an HEI dist converted to trigger a MSD 6AL box. Thanks,
hey, let me know how thar HEI dist converter works. I was thinking about getting one and converting my points to HEI so dont have to but a new dist seeing how my HEI is damaged I think
The HEI conversion is only about 8 bucks and has worked great triggering my MSD box. I am not sure what is going on w/ my ignition but I am pretty sure it is not the because of the conversion kit. Good luck.
Could the coil be dropping it charge! What type of coil are you using. I had an old tower style that had a crack down the side of the tower and would ground out giving the same symptoms.
Phil, I am still running the coil in the cap and forget the brand. I guess it could be overheating and dropping voltage. I will try a new this weekend at the track. Still trying to get this car flying... Thanks,
Yikes... Lose that coil in the cap, and I think your gonna be happy.. I never ran that on the run stand or the dyno.. we used external coils.. always.. Your motor is way beyond that E-coil.. JW
Jim, Thanks, I know that I need to move to an external coil. Funny thing with my distributor is that the advance plate moves but doesn't add any advance. I reset it to 34 degrees and WOW it really woke up. I think it might be time for a new MSD distributor. Thanks,
Wouldn't hurt.. And I bet it woke up.. I did weld that plate up so it had not much movement, your combo wanted a lot of inital to maintain idle quality with that cam.. You'll get there..
"Yikes... Lose that coil in the cap, and I think your gonna be happy.. I never ran that on the run stand or the dyno.. we used external coils.. always.. Your motor is way beyond that E-coil.." So what you are saying is that an external coil is better than an HEI? I have both and was planning on using the HEI on my just rebuilt 455 because I though it would be less hassel and more reliable with a longer spark, or to use the points distrubiter and convert it to a moderen electric dist with the 1 wire feed conversion kit summit sells and still maintain the external coil.. What should I do? Which is best recommened? I want to start this motor up n brake it in soon and im just waiting to finish the carb and decide on a dist. Thanks~Vinny
Vinny, I would say that for most street motors the HEI w/ internal coil would be okay. If you want, you can get an adapter from MSD that allows you to use an external coil w/ an HEI. I would use the HEI over the converted points dist. Good luck,
I guess it may work... Til you're on the side of the road wanting a lift. Not that reliable with that old design. Go to Buickstreet.com, and look for the ignitionman.
Thanks guys:TU: I think Im gonna go with the HEI to be sefe, I dont know theirs just something about HEI that I like. Also, whats the best gap fo rthe plugs? Im gonaa break the motor in in about a week, this is my set up...
