Well today, I built my custom rear package shelf. It's 3/4" plywood, covered in black automotive carpet, and built to house 4 6x9 speakers. It came out great! Sure beats that old warped, crumbled cardboard that came in it lol.

Here's a few pics of the test fit and work in progress... haven't done the final install yet.

We used 3m spray adhesive to stick the carpet to the wood (it's the same spray I use to stick the Auralex acoustic foam to the walls in the studio), and then stapled the edges on the back.

This did require some cutting of the metal deck.

Looks good, should sound nice with the music bouncing off the back window. Great job!

Very nice! Put grilles on those speakers, for protection. Was the car originally stereo? How did you decide to run the wiring?

Yeah there's grills for them; these pis were just the test fit. The car originally had (and still has) an am radio and one speaker in the dash. I installed a stereo under the dash and left the factory radio in it. I put 4" Infinity speakers in the kick panels, and those 4 6x9's in the rear deck. The wiring runs under the carpet.

The front door panels are damaged on the bottom, so I'm going to do a little fabrication and rebuild them with 6.5" speakers in the front doors, and put an amp to them, as the 6x9's kinda drown out the front speakers. I also want to put some tweets in, maybe on the dash. I'm going to put 2 12's in the trunk as well, in custom enclosures, one on each side of the trunk, and I'll still have all my trunk space. The amps will be mounted up on the hump under the rear package shelf, out of the way.

I'm gonna do the exact thing to mine. put the JBL 6 by 9's in and cut out the old cardboard as well. I was just gonna go with 1/4 inch sheet, cut to fit and cover just like you have done here. 4 in the rear seems like overkill. I might just run an amp to the 6 by 9's or possibly put a 12" sub in the trunk. I've just been lazy lately. But it looks good and kinda got me motivated to get mine finished! :beers2:

How did you get to the factory speaker? Mine is blown. I have a 68 Wildcat and it looks the same in the shop manual. I would love to replace it the job looks like a real pain in the ass though.

I left the one factory speaker in the dash. I left the factory radio as well. I built a console to sit on the tranny tunnel to house the new radio and connected the new speakers to that. the factory sound system is still intact and functioning, for what that's worth.
