Curious-Looking Secondary Baffle

I just got back from the 2012 ROA meet in Monterey, had a great time. The engine has 248 carb number 2 on it, and it ran great the whole trip: no leaks, stumbles, or surges.

I'm still working on another 248 Q-Jet, and have a good carb body without an air-horn. I just got a 7037213 (for Chevy Camaro, I think) core for parts, and I noticed that the secondary baffle has an interesting addition.

Here's a shot of the baffle from my Rembrandt 241 Q-Jet, and the baffle from the Chevy Q-Jet:

The normal baffle is just a flat plate, with circular cut-outs for the secondary fuel feed pipes. This other baffle has this little basket spot-welded to it on the fuel cutout on the passenger side:

Anybody here know what this basket does? Is it just to help direct the fuel flow for the passenger-side secondary bore? Would it be worth trying out on one of my 7027248 Buick 4MV Q-Jets?

I may have found the answer. This carb seems to be for small-block Chevy 327cid engines...and the low-CFM of those intakes may affect the pull of the fuel to the secondary bores. I guess the basket is there to act as a venturi to help direct the fuel flow once the secondaries kick in.

If that were the case, why wouldn't there be one for each side, evening it out a bit... Is this for a notched secondary flap top fuel feed?

The secondary air flaps on the carb were not notched. I've got them now mounted on the air horn I'm using for the next 248 rebuild. I guess the basket was only needed for one bore, not both. I'll try the basket-bore out on one of the other 248s some day...maybe in the next week or so. I'm still toying with the secondary air-flap spring on 248 #2...it's getting closer. I still like the flow & drive of the carb I'm running, just need the secondaries to kick in a little quicker.

I don't think I would even waste the time to try that out on mine without a more accurate testing method... These carbs were dialed in pretty good it seems for each application they were intended to run on... and it being only on one side and all... But hey, you got a decent test bed to play with there... I don't know if the seat of the pants would notice if that were their or not... Did you try to open the restriction up a bit on the plastic pull off vacuum nossle or try one of those adjustable ones that go in line to let it come off a bit quicker as well as the spring tension...

Edit: The Stock Notched Plates usually had the fuel come out just over the flap, where as the solid ones had the flow come out just under them... Take a look.. I think I remember Cliff stateing in his book that the lower ones were preferable...
