My brother has this system installed on his '71 Triumph TR6. He makes me work on this car frequently (since it's a British hunk of Junk) - Actually it is a VERY nice car and places well in stuffy British car shows. Anyway, I digress. The triggering device (points replacement) is optical. There is a system of shutters, much like a camera shutter, that spin on the spinning shaft. On optical sensor is triggered when it "sees" an open shutter. The installation and adjustment is simple (at least on the Triumph). Wear and tear in the old distributor is much less of a problem with the Crane system than with that problematic, infamous magnetic aftermarket device that I happen to be using. If you go to the Crane website you can view the installation manual online.

When/if my Pertronix bites the big one I'll probably switch to Crane.

Like many of these systems, you'll probably need a coil meeting certain resistance specifications.

    Brad,

I believe the XR-i uses a hall-effect(magnetic) sensor, instead of a optical shutter.

Though, the XR3000 uses an opitcal shutter.

Crane generally sells high quality stuff. Isn't this the new kit with the built in rev limiter? Looks like a nice piece, but I wonder how hot a spark It'll supply VS a hopped up HEI...

I've removed 71 of them so far, from rev limiter problems Crane doesn't want to admit to or warrantee.

There's a much better way to make a points dist into electronic, and no, it isn't Pertronix.

    XRI is magnetic
XR7000 is the old Allison, light sensor

What does everybody think they are getting for $70.00, an HEI?

Last time I called Crane about the XR-I, it was not avail. yet for the Buick. That was about 3 months ago. Do they have it now?

Same one is used in Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet, and a modified one for Pontiac and Olds. As far as I know, they've been available for the right hand rotation GM dists for over 5 months, directly from Crane. Same unit fits right hand rotation AMC and Studebaker Delco "window" points dists as well.

so dave, what do you think of the crane optically-triggered systems? that would be the xr700, xr3000, or their seperate trigger which is made to be wired to an ignition box like an HI-6 or 6A.

i've tossed the pertronix for points for the time being, and i'm debating between a standalone HEI or a system with a seperate CD box. (of course, if it's HEI, the distributor will go to you for a conversion :TU: )
