Let me know your thoughts on this it is in the center of the head. I had asked my guy who did the heads to check for cracks but that did not work out. Any chance that this can be repaired? The engine it is going on is a mild street engine, the hole is a coolant hole The head is a stage 1 head
Anything can be repaired, but I would probably just replace the head. You should be able to get a head cheap. Even if it's not a Stage 1 head, the labor to convert it may not be a lot more than repairing that one and you won't have to worry about the repair failing. I would think that the heat from repairing that crack may warp the head which would require milling.
Had a head on a old farm tractor cracked with no parts available. Cracks not as deep as this one but had more of them. Machine shop used a spray welder to fix it, looked like a cutting torch with a can of iron grindings attached. I watched him do it and was quite the show. Warned me to never overheat the engine. Over 1,000 hours since the repair and no problems.
There’s a place in Wichita called Cylinder Head Repair that does, of all things, cylinder head repair. They’ve done work for some friends of mine with fantastic results. They’ve also fixed a block for me with a cracked lifter bore, and the engine had zero issues afterward. Maybe there’s a place in your city that handles this sort of thing. Done correctly, the repair would be like it never happened.
This is the industry accepted repair method. You can certainly do it yourself, but the kit is kinda pricey. Any competent engine shop can do the same repair, and they have the kit and fasteners on hand. Some quote by the inch and others, well. you can guess... ws
No charge! Unheard of, in this day and time. Given he missed the crack previously N/C is the least he should do...
