The cowl of my '70 GS has that hard but flexible screen-type material covering the cowl and wiper motor access... I do have an aftermarket piece, but it is not wide enough to tuck under the chrome winshield moulding or the area where it clips in the rear. I could probably make this work but don't want to drill more holes in the car.. Does anyone know where someone could get this type of material? It wouldn't be hard to simply make one ...or, someone who carries a faithful reproduction that fits? Thanks!! Bob C.
Not supposed to go under lower windshield stainless trim....stops at small oblong holes where H clips go in to hold the screen in place....you have the correct one.
Original parts group has it and the clips, try here: http://www.opgi.com/p/body-moldings-trim/14560/73/G240594.html
Intersting...that's the one I have. If you line the holes up on the front edge of the screen, it is not wide enough to extend back far enough to be captured by the H-clips on the rearward part of the cowl. ..in other words it stops a bit before the oblong holes..and only goes back far enough to just cover the cowl openings.
Nobody repros a cowl screen that is an exact copy to my knowledge. The screen for Buicks was different from the other Abody cars that used similar screens. The Buick screen for at least '70-2 has a prominent raised "ridge" stamped into the screen across the back (the long side that's closest to the windshield....probably for stiffening). The Parts Place sells a screen I believe but I think it's just a flat screen without the "ridge". Put up a "Parts Wanted" ad for a good used one....they pop up occasionally on this site and are still out there.
If I may add to this, there is also a raised section molded in right over the wiper motor areas as well as the ridge along the back. I can tell you from personal experience not to bother with the parts place repro, might as well just cut your own out of some mesh if you can find it. Way too heavy material, no ridges, crappy ends. Waste of money IMHO (and we all work hard for our money). Can't speak of any other source. Attached pic shows the hump over the wiper motor on original screen.
Yes they do and allow better access but they are also incorrect for all except later 72's. They let more leaves and crap through as well.
this is true but for for some of us they will do just fine not all of us have to own the perfect car:bglasses: ---------- Post added at 07:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:50 PM ---------- does your car spend a lot of nights outdoors Timou:
LOL...actually it does and just for the record the Stage 1 has the plastic parts on it, they do work ok and look good, access is great but not in there much. I was just pointing it out, that's all.
When I found out they were not available I was going to make a correct copy of the Buick screen, and bought the screening material to do it, but so far there doesn't seem to be enough demand for the part. Everytime someone asks for one it seems good used ones are available. Duane
Duane, Where did you get the screening material? I've had a difficult time finding it available in such small amounts.
I bought it like 8-10 years ago and do not remember where I got it. However I do know this, I had to buy a big roll to get it, something like 50 feet long and it cost some money. Should be enough for 70 cowl screens. Duane
Scott, Sure. I will measure the roll width when I get home but I believe it is wide enough to make a cowl screen for every foot or less up the roll. If you are going to make the GS screens you have to remember to bump up the area in front of the wiper transmission, otherwise the transmission will hit the screen when it swings around. Duane
OK, The original cowl screens were 42" wide and approximately 9" deep. The screening material had 10 squares per inch. What I have is 48" wide and has 8 squares per inch, so the squares are a little bigger then the originals. It is also galvanized so it should not rust easily, but needs to be painted black when finished. I have used quite a bit of the material up for various projects and have approximately 19 feet left. The cost would be $3.00 a foot plus shipping if you guys want some. Duane
