The utility company or maybe DOT came through and cleared the right of way along US90. and reviled these old guys that have been sitting hidden for many years. Thought it was cool.
My wife loves them. If I ever find a nice driver (not looking hard), at a steal, I may buy it. 2dr. or 4dr.
I like the Super Hawks and Larks, too. They're so different, and kind of ugly, but they're cool. And any company doing factory superchargers is ok by me
This is one bad mofo......526" Cadillac, and the fab work like recessing the exhaust is amazing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1953-Stude...AOSwGVFcJ-gB:rk:1:pf:1&vxp=mtr&frcectupt=true
That aerodynamic design was credited to Raymond Lowey Studios but it was performed by none other than Virgil Exner who was on loan to Studebaker. He later became famous for the Chrysler forward look cars. In 38 I think he worked on Buick design. Maybe the grill. Edit —it looks like Exners understudy Bob Bourke gets credit for the slope nose design.
I liked the bullet noses and the early Hawks. I actually had a '60 lark. It was a flathead six and was seriously underpowered; it had the worst heater of any car that I have ever owned that had a heater. It was also the best car in snow that I have ever owned.
My grandmother had Studebakers. Her last car before she quit driving was an early 60's Lark. She kept it up for a few more years, until she came to live with us after her foot amputation due to diabetes. I personally don't remember much about it, as a was just knee high back then.
Mine was a flathead six with 3 on three plus overdrive. The bullet nose was an Exner and Bourke design as I recall and inspired by the Lockheed P 38 Lightning.
Mine circa 1962-3 when it was a fresh custom....the pic is From Iowa in the parking lot of a convention center, where it was shown 1954
its a parts car now..guy tried to chop it, and killed the car....stripped it, never could figure the chop and it sat since the 70s til i saved it..it has a 1960 Pontiac 425A Trophy 389 in it, which is loaded with forged everything and 4 bolt mains..orig a tripower, but now 2x4 the 53 aqnd 54 C/K coupes are the most sought.. show card from 62-63
The Packard hawk was about a catfish looking thing...... Studes are a strange bunch of cars...... Look at this thing, oh wait, that's mine. One fugly machine when I drug it home. Still scratch my head when I look at it sometimes. It has the right engine at least.
YAHOO! I like the catfish analogy! Right on target! We hafta get Luke to do a supercharger on his Caddy. That old HEMI-HUNTER is killer! ws
My wife has a '53 Champion (same body style as the green car above) with a small block Chevy and she loves it.
