Are Wittek Tower Top Clamps believed to be "correct" for the 70-72 cars? I just found these while surfing... Thanks!
Brett, The Wittek Tower Clamps would be correct for all 70-72 Radiator Hoses, but that style hose clamp was not used for all the 70-72 heater hose locations. The style of heater hose clamp differed depending on production plant and options, ie whether the car was equipped with AC or not. Duane PS. If you look in the assembly manual it shows the clamp styles that were used, and with a little detective work you can figure out which style clamps were used for the different plants.
Carl, Reading this thing isn't easy!! o No: I think Duane needs to give an on line tutorial entitled: :Smarty: "Assembly Manual 101"-Deciphering and Understanding Your Buick's Assembly Manual :Comp:
I was noticing this at the last BCA show in Batavia. Many of the restored GS's and GSX's there had the spring type clamps on the heater hoses at the firewall side. But they all seemed to have the Wittek style on the engine side connections. Not sure if that was correct or not, but that the way I did mine I just have to say that I really hate these tower style clamps. The only reason that I have them on my car is that they are unfortunately the original style. They leak occasionally and you cant get them off easily. I spoke to someone that had the lower radiator hose blow off because of that clamp. One little trick I do to preclude leaks is to take a little Indian Head gasket shellac and coat the inside of the hose before I clamp it down.
Indian Head gasket shellac is a product thats been around probably since cast iron first came out. Any auto parts store worth its salt should have it in stock. I learned that trick from my uncle Jim when I was a youngster. Dont really know if it helps, but Ive never had a leak yet
Brett, I'll make you a deal, if you want I will do a workshop at the BPG Nats called; "Assembly Manual 101"-Deciphering and Understanding Your Buick's Assembly Manual. Just remind me about it before the show. I did write an article, for the club newsletter, regarding drawing revision dates that will help with figuring out when changes occurred. The big problem us "Buick" A-body owners face is that we have so many "Concours" examples of mid-late 1970 production Flint cars, namely 70 GSX's, that people tend to think all the 70-72 cars were built like that. If you can't figure it out you might want to call me some night so we can talk about this. I would do it myself, but right now I am working on 3 articles for the BPG newsletter and do not have the time. Duane
