Had an interesting discussion with the guy at the local plating place today. He is very friendly, and obviously knows his stuff. Grille studs were one of the items I had to be plated, and when I told him I wanted silver cadmium he said sure no problem, but am I doing concours or what are my goals?? He said that GM stopped using silver cad in the mid 60's and went to silver zinc instead except for the corvette. Same with gold cad, mostly zinc dichromate...

So my question is, when someone says silver cad, do they mean silver CADMIUM or generally silver plating? Silver cad has actually been banned in several States and Ontario is heading there too aparantly, as its quite toxic.

He had samples of the two silvers, and frankly the zinc one looked nicer anyway so I went that way. But it raised my curiosity, the whole plating thing is becoming another black magic area!!

Maybe we should have a plated thread here too for all the different parts.

    Thoughts??
