I dont think much of Boyd as an individual, but this is very bizzarre and even he didnt deserve it. Just my opinion.

The State is really cracking down on fraudulent registrations. The days of paying 30 grand for a 41 Buick and telling DMV you paid 100 bucks is gone. I have been told that they had reprsentatives at the big Labor Day cruise and also at other events and they are noting what cars are for sale and how much. That is entered in a data base and when that license plate shows up at the DMV they can cross check it.
They are also looking at kit cars that have no original parts but are being registered as the year they represent. That was this issue at Boyds. I hear they found nothing but tied up his business for a day. If you have a glass bodied car with a TCI chassis thats registered as a '32 then you could be in trouble.
Whats next. Are they going to start saying that we cant build our own cars due to safety concerns. That would be an easy sell to the average citizen who knows very little about cars.
Ahh my paranoia runs rampant :af:

    An additional thought
The Gov here in Calif signed a bill 3 weeks ago that requires a vehicle to comply with the smog laws that are in effect for the engine you use. So if I am building a '32 and I order a crate motor, the smog has to be for the year of that crate motor including air pumps, cats, etc. :moonu:

A thought for all. When you hear of a bill that is in your states governors office or representatives office and it is erroding our hobby, call, write, e-mail, do something or we will have nothing. The government and most of the public see our hobby as a bunch of unsafe old polluting cars that the world would not miss.
Now I think I'll go join the militia

    71GS455 Best Package Wins!

When I went to license my 72 Skylark (AKA: The $300 Buick), I brought in pictures of the front end that didn't have grill or bumper, the back end also without a bumper, the rear window that looks like a dozen tubes of silicone gave their lives to let it still leak, the lack of a transmission, and the hole in the oil pump where the internals were trying to go Alcatraz on it.

I showed her the receipt for the car and the pictures. We looked through the classifications and used the one for a car that was essentially for parts - a hulk. Had it been a running/driving car and I paid $300 for it, I would have had to pay sales tax on car in condition 3 or 4, which would have been almost as much as I paid for the car. Instead it was around $20 tax plus collector licensing fee.

I hate to pay tax on a used car!! Once when new is enough. Some cars pay tax 5 or 6 times easily in its life span. The gov. is screwing us on that one.

Looks like one helluva good reason to forego those silly schibby crate motors and stuff a '70 455 into everything you can find!

    Gotta love Kalifornia! :spank:

22 agents from 5 State departments showing up guns drawn, wearing flak vests...all to serve a warrant and investigate possible fraud!

Gee, if they were actually going to go arrest Boyd, would they have brought along some M1A2 Abrams' for support, or just shot everybody in the building?

And people actually want to live there... :Dou:

tlivingd BIG BLOCK, THE ANTI PRIUS

wisconsin and Illinois both require your vehicle to meet the emission req for the current year of engine in your vehicle. 87 has to meet an 87 cars standard. even if it's in a 32 or whatever. I personaly think it sucks. espically when the cars get older and no replacement is available.
I'm not sure about Cats though.

Um, how can they tell? Let's say I have my car in California and register it. I have a '70 car with a '74 engine block and '73 internals and heads.

Are they going to pull a head off and check the code? Sounds bloody unlikely.

How about if I cracked my '70 block and the only one I could get is a '76 block? They will make me have emissions for the year of the BLOCK?

Also, what if you have a GM replacement block from back in the day??? The code could say '73 but the car could be a '70 and never ever had emissions on it because GM replaced the engine three years after the car was built.

That's one wacky law and I feel for the car guys in Cally.

    69conv Thats a BUICK!?

I agree with poods. A car should be taxed only once. My car has had 13 owners since it came to Canada in '72. The Canadain government has taxed my car 14 times alone! :blast:

While I don't like Boyd much either, with the way things are going, it's impossible for me to refrain...

This is just another ridiculous example of the government run-a-muck. California is out of control. The rights of the minority are being violated constantly to impress the brainless and irrational majority. I don't care what political affiliations you have, but if you think this kind of bill will help more than it'll hurt, then maybe this country isn't for you. Refering to our rights as "loopholes" and then passing a bill to take away those rights while claiming to have closed that "loophole" makes the politician look great to the 95% of uninformed voters out there. It makes me sick.

Sorry for the rant... but after the Governator signed a bill that banned guns capable of firing a certain caliber that's been around for over 70 years and NOT ONCE been used in a crime, I couldn't help myself. They're constantly attacking my two favorite hobbies. I'm just glad I don't live there, though I fear they are setting an example for the rest of the nation. These things keep me up at night.

    darrenkp Love that Torque!

What upsets me is that everyone I talk too feels the same way about crap like this, yet somehow the morons that pass these laws keep getting elected! :blast: :blast: :blast: Don't post your frustrations here, VOTE!!!!!!!!!!

The Governator blindsided us car folks. It was generally thought he would not sign it. He is good buds with Leno and we all know what a car nut he is. This was a big surprise. You are right about voting. If you dont vote ya cant bitch about the way things are. People died to give us this freedom and everyone should vote.

I spent the evening at the local Car Club Council meeting tonight. The CHP will be the enforcers of any new laws they pass. We dont know how they will do it, who will train them, etc., but it was discussed that the DMV may require the engine ID in addition to the VIN to be on the pink and registration. I dont know how they will enforce any of this, but that doesnt really matter. The fact they are trying really pisses me off. :spank:

A representative from John Force Racing attended the meeting tonight to promote his run on 12/7. It's a popular run, but the CHP have a large presence at the show. They participate with a car or two and usually have an info booth. Several folks in the council are hesitant about going because they have glass cars. The main target. I doubt if anything would happen at the show but............. They said in the Boyd article that they will be checking for illegal registrations at car shows. :moonu:

The whole thing is a big pile of crapola :af: :af:

    Some additional thoughts...

I agree with the darrenkp, VOTE!

Not to discredit Street Rodder, but I was under the impression that Law Enforcement had strict guidelines as to when to serve a warrant with guns drawn. I can't imagine how Boyd's shop would require this in any way. Maybe an LEO can comment on this?

Wouldn't checking registrations require probable cause or something? Seems to me like this could be a 4th Amendment issue... and yes, I do realize that California doesn't recognize the Bill of Rights (or atleast they don't act like it). Any lawyers able to comment on this?

Lastly, it was rumored that Leno placed several calls to Arnold before he signed the bill pleading with him not to. Pretty low blow if you ask me. You let a guy announce his candidacy on your show and he turns around and pretty much puts the brakes on the hobby you've invested millions on. I'd be a little more than upset.
