Any help would be appreciated. When installing shim head gaskets , do you copper spray the block and head as well as the gaskets? Do you have to then mask the bores and combustion chambers in the head to prevent overspray?

Silver color laquer paint, that's what the factory used, on the gasket only.

HYLOMAR spray is the way to go! The stuff works!

When I use the shim headgaskets, I spray both sides of the gasket only with Coppercoat.
Funny thing, when I was in Vo-Tech school (many years ago..:pp ), I had a retired military mechanic as a teacher. He taught us to GREASE both sides of a steel-shim headgasket with regular grease. Said he'd been doing it since he started (probably WW II times)...:Do No:

Coppercoat is good but HYLOMAR is the ticket. Mustang vortech cars and 14.5 comp Mustangs are having great success with the stuff.

I used a VHT "Copper Spray" on both sides of the gasket only. 10 years later, no leaks!

When I rebuilt my heads a month or so ago, was I supposed to use a spray or sealer on my head gaskets? I just used the FelPros from Auto Zone. Nothing said to use a spray sealer. Did I goof?

normal fel-pro composite head gaskets are most definately best off dry. i think the steel shims just need a little extra layer since a thin piece of metal isn't going to conform well to minor scratches or other abnormalities.
