My 69 convertible top squeaks when going over mild bumps in the road in the top frame on the passenger side up front where the top frame locks or latches to the windshield header. I have tried tightening the adjustment hook but it still squeaks. I have heard this noise before in other GM A- body convertibles . The sound seems like it may be coming from a spring in the front part of the side frame just above the front passenger's right cranium. From the drivers seat the squeaking sound seems to radiate over the right side sunvisor. Unlatch the top and/or lower the top and the sound disappears! Anyone else have this annoying squeak? I'm going to have my top guy pull the canvas back and see if I can maybe put something between that spring where it might be flexing or rubbing on the top surface of the front side frame just underneath the canvas. Anyone have any similar experience with their convertible? Thanks, Eric :3gears:
No squeaks, but a really annoying rattle above the drivers window that goes away if i start reaching around while I'm driving. Haven't had a chance to look but doesn't seem too major to tighten up. At least I'm hoping.ray:
I have also noticed that when its warmer outside the squeak disapears! Now that brings to mind that it just very well may be that, that spring is expanding and contracting with heat and cold. More testing I guess! Eric... :3gears:
Wait, I think you answered your own question....."unlatch the top and/or lower the top and the sound disappears". You drive your convertible with the top up?!?! Down is the only way, it's a ragtop man! Mike
I've had the same issue with a few tops on various cars. I thought is was the debris in the channel that the spring and cable ride in. Clean all that out and used spary lithium in the channel and on spring and cable. Seemed to solve the issue. I assume the top is properly adjusted and fits without air or water leaks- correct? Better solutions however are to turn up radio, put top down, apply more throttle to increase Buick V-8 engine sound to level where you can't hear squeak. Not necessarily in that order and dependant on weather conditions.
Put the top fully down so you can see the latches. Lube everything with clear silicone spray, latches springs, also do the rubbers. Make sure your top clamps down real tight and you should have no problem. Convertibles are a real pain in the butt with squeeks.
