It should be black, you're right but as I say- Use what you got!!! It's on my to do list. But I need to get traction first! So it's suspension work before shifter work. At least until the Kleiner stick comes out.
Also, does anyone know of a place selling the correct upper shift boot for a '65 GS (the one that mounts in the consolette)? I have one in mine that came from Year One, but the hole in the top of it for the handle to go through is rectangular in shape--which is the way they were made for the later years that had a rectangular shaped hurst shifter handle. The '65 has a round GM shifter in it and the boot doesn't fit correctly around it--it fits loose and looks bad because it is square and the handle going through it is round. I put a small black zip-tie around it to pull it up and it looks okay, but I hate to rig it like that.
It seems I have seen that somewhere, but I can't remember where. I'll do a little looking and see if I can come across it. One thing you might try if you can't find one with a round hole is to use a rubber grommet. It would need to be as large as the rectangular cutout, but you may find something that will work. Maybe even something like the speedometer cable grommet or the grommet for the auto transmission cable. Both are available from Year One although the latter may be a little pricey for what you want to do. But you could cut the raised rectangular part off the boot and rubber cement a grommet in place. With the pictures you have here of your car, I'm sure you could make it look nice. Check out McMaster Carr too. They have a TON of stuff to stimulate the imagination when you have to improvise something. By the way, thanks for the advice on the hump. I worked on mine this weekend and got it trimmed and in place. Tom
Brian, I got one from Metro and it is the same. It also is a gloss black and the original was more of a mat black. The new one is also too thick and will not fit correctly in the chrome ring and allow the lower ring to fit on the tabs. Thanks Bill
Brian- This is what I was thinking of. I think it may be the same, but in the picture it appears to be round. It may just be the angle of the shot, but you could call and ask. Tom
