I have one question concerning the console bottom fit where it meets the carpet. I have all the information on restoring the console and placment, brackets ect.. I have completly striped the console down to the plastic shell, Ready to be cleaned and dyed.
So I placed the console plastic housing in the car between the bucket seats, placed in the center of the hump and slid it from front to back to feel where it seem to settle into position the best. While pushing down on it at the front and rear it fit well with the curve of the hump and carpet. so to get to the point, areas along both sides that can be seen {seat bottom forward} there is a gap between the carpet and the console base. Enough to slide your finger under, but not straight in from the side , pointing upward more. It will look good mounted, but untill the shifter is bolted on to the floor I wont know exactly how bad a fit it is. The carpet is new repo and looks great. Is this a simple fix by placing additional padding under the carpet to push it outward to meet th console base in gap areas, or is this a normal fit ?

Before you worry about the fit do you have the brackets that weld to the floor for the console?? There needs to be one in front up under the dash and one in the rear behind where the shifter goes. The one in the rear is reproduced but not the front I believe. this could be your fit problem. Also there is a round circle in the hump where a hole saw needs to cut a hole for the cable. Drill out this first then set up the shifter to this. The screw holes for the shifter should have dimples in areas on hump that you can see. When shifter is set up and working properly then set up console to shifter. Find those brackets or fab up the front one your self.

Also the factory used interior lacquer paint on the consoles not dye. I have seen dyes peel off consoles. Just clean very well before you paint.

Yea, I thought I should go ahead with the shifter install first, and I planed on fabing up my own brackets, It would be nice to know the exact factory set height of the brackets from the center hump to the top of the bracket, then it would be a matter of adding or removing some of the carpet padding to ger the desired carpet to console fit. I already have console installation instructions for bracket , shifter and cable hole placment. Well guess i'll pull my seats and carpet and get the shifter, cable and column linkage working. Any idea on those bracket heights ? If not no problem ill figure it out. Thanks for your time.

I would try and buy that repro bracket for te rear. Not to expensive I think. I think rear height is about an inch and maybe front 1/2 to 3/4" maybe. I may get mine apart in a week or so if you want to wait.

I know theres a rectangular braket for the rear, but I dont recall a welded on bracket for the front. The front bracket attaches to the shifter mechanism itself

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Get the correct rear bracket for $25 or so from www.thepartsplaceinc.com
You do NOT need the front one.
Use the rear brkt and the shifter bracket and you will be set.

Our own Duane Heckman has an article on our site about carpet fitment vs old(orig) carpet fitment. Also, remember...most people will be viewing your console from above and not below or beside it. So, any gap, will be difficult to see.
