If it's an AT then you would need a console and shifter from a 68 GS or a 69 console. 70-72 are a different style. Function is the same but it looks different. A console from a 68 Skylark will be a 2spd. The 68-69 console's are identical except the 68 skylark insert for the indicators would be a 2spd. It will have D and L2. The GS or 69 Skylark will have D L2 L1.

The 68-69 inserts are also usually pitted and most need a good resto to look perfect. You can fill the pits and repaint.
I used argent silver to repaint mine.

I don't think all 68's are 2 spds when they are automatics. Were TH400's not available with a floor shift in 68?

Only on a GS400. Unless they put a TH350 behind the 400ci in 68 which would be hard to believe.

All 68 Skylarks are not 2 speeds. In fact, I don't even know if the two speed was available in 68 unless maybe on a 6 cylinder.

i've seen a lot of 2 speed in 68's no 3 or 4 speed auto trannys

    gscalifornia Small blocks rule!!

The 350s got the two speed and the 400s had the 3 speed turbo400

Thanks Ken. 68 is weird man. Crossover year and all. So many different nuances. So what about a TH350 for 69? Were they also 2 speeds?

69's had more 3spds than 2spds available if you go by trying to find clusters for them on ebay. I could never find one for my 68, that is until I bought a 69 cluster. And then there were 3-4 that came up. I finally bought a nice 68 3spd cluster w/the speed minder (I just have to install it). I bet the consoles are harder to come by.

the consoles are damn near impossible to find which is probably why i have the lemans console in my car, starting to consider a dual gate shifter i think it would bolt right in any thoughts?

Not that I have one, but what is a 68 3spd console worth?

I'm not sure what your lemans console looks like, but if you have a complete set-up that you like, who cares? I was debating between sticking with the tilt column shift that I have, or going with a lokar style floor shifter that emulates a stick-shift set-up.

its complete but i like the buick console and shifter better, the lemans has a t-handle shifter and it just looks out of place. i think the dual gate/his hers will look nicer, should bolt right in and would be a moderately unique addittion. i can't ever recall seeing one in a skylark or gs.

chrisc1541, I am going to have two 68/9 consoles for sale in a month or two. One will be console and shifter and one just a console. One will have a 2 speed shift indicator and one a 2 speed. I am restoring one for my 68 and will have the extras left over. Just cannot get to them for a month or two. If you want to send me a PM and I will let you know when I get the ready to sell and give you first shot at them. Thanks Bill.
