Does anyone have a "short non-shift" console in their car? My car was ordered with one but the bracket that is in the car does not work with that particular console. I have attached a picture of the bracket that is in the car. The correct bracket is next to it on the floor. There is also a second front bracket that should used but does not appear in this car at all. Any ideas/experience is appreciated. -Mike

I put one in my '71 which was originally a bench seat car.
I didn't see a need for a bracket. I drilled pilot holes in the floor hump at the same location as the mtg. holes in the console.Used #14 sheetmetal screws, those used to secure the armrest bases to the doors. It's been there 3-4 years now without issue.
Go to George's site & have a look under "Members Rides".

From what I see in the parts book the mtg. brackets were bolted/screwed to the floor hump. Your pic the bracket is welded?

    Mike,

I also converted a bench seat car with buckets and added the short console like Steve did since I didn't have the brackets, and it seemed to work OK. I was always worried that the plastic base would crack without the bracket to support it around the bolt holes if it was hit to one side, but it never did.

As far as your car and the bracket, it is a new one on me. I'm guessing it is the bracket for the "mini console" type with the accordion door, but not sure if that console would fit between the seats and I have never seen a pic of one installed to see where it was mounted.

I now have a short console I bought a few years ago that came with the brackets that look exactly like yours , and they were clearly welded to the floor pan, not bolted or screwed. I measured the mounting holes in the console to see if it would somehow help you figure it out, but a picture of an original car with the brackets would be nice to see. The rear bracket holes are 2.75" apart, and the front bracket hole is 11" toward the front.

Here is a picture of the brackets, but not 100% sure they came out of an A body. I have heard the console bases are cut differently on the big cars compared to the A bodies, and mine seems to fit the floor pan of the A body car it's going in. Good luck.

    72staged, Mike,
I did a little research about the 72 consoles and besides the regular automatic, and manual shift consoles there were two other types.

The one type is referred to as a "short" console and was option "DE8". This used 1 bracket and mounted in front of the front seat. (This is the square one with the top sliding door.)

The other one was referenced as a non-shift console and was option "D56". This one used 1 bracket and a screw hole in the front (for the A-bodies) and went between the seats. (This is the one the guys are referring to as Type 1 & 2, with either an emblem or a button.)

If needed I have assembly manual pics of both and can send paper copies to you. If you don't have my info contact James and he can give it to you.

Is the non-shift consoles a Buick thing? I have an '86 Regal with this very option and to my puzzlement have never seen another car like this until I stumble across this thread!
