Hey all, I need some computer help. My buddy profile for AIM infected my cousins fiancee's computer w/a virus somehow when she looked at it, and I feel bad. Do any of you know of a free virus scanner she can download to try and fix it. She said the virus is called bloodworm or something, and when you turn the computer on, a ton of pop-ups come up and shuts down the computer. Any and all help is appreciated.
Virus scan: http://www.pcpitstop.com/freescan/default.asp Spyware scan: http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=trial_google8 http://www.stopzilla.com/download/d...&S=67&type=DOWNLOAD&topic=&source=&AAID=&dre= Also, do you have Service Pack 2? If not update to that, it will also help with the popups.
I use AVG free on this PC, so far it has detected or stopped all the viruses I have run into. Also Ad-Aware SE works good for spyware and hijackers. Spybot SD works good to,[both free] make sure its spybot SD, there are others that have the name spybot in them, some of them have a free scan and say you have all this crap on your computer and then want you to spend money to remove it, I have heard that some of the so called free programs install junk on your computer so you have to pay to get them removed.I am no expert but if its getting alot of pop ups could it be a bad spyware or maybe a hijacker that is the problem? PC-cillin has a free online scan also and will fix problems for free. PC-cillin tested as one of the best antivirus scans there is right now in PC world magazine. But if the PC shuts down I don't know if a online scan will be any help or if you will be able to download anything, Maybe you will have to download a antivirus to a disk on another PC then install it on the messed up PC. I hope this helps. Tom
Reboot it and tap the F8 key a few times right after the DELL (or whatever brand you have) screen goes away. You'll get a screen with several options. Choose "Safe Mode With Network Support". Then download Trojan Hunter, Ad-Aware and Spybot. The Trojan Hunter is PAY software, but you get a 30 day free trial and it works great until it expires.
While in Safe Mode (with networking, as Yardly described) head over to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (TrendMicro's free online virus scan) for a Virus Scan - I have used this many, many times with a lot of success.
shortcut to that is http://housecall.antivirus.com EDIT: bah they changed the page on me since i last visited. ignore me
Here is a link to AVG Free Edition. (Near the bottom of the page.) Remember, always have a program (antivirus, antispyware, etc.) check for updates before you run it. Otherwise it is like researching your science homework about moon landings using a 1954 encyclopedia.
Yeah, I wanted to give the link directly to the scan, that (should) bring you to the page right before the scan :TU:
or just don't use internet exploder and spyware for the most part disappears. in fact, in using Opera and FireFox for the past 2 years i have had a grand total of zero spyware invading my system, i don't even install a spyware program anymore due to this. i also don't have a virus scanner installed anymore.. double checked with the online scan by trend micro and zero virus' in my system. i'm sure if i scanned for spyware i'd find zero as well. so that's my advice to you guys. don't use internet explorer and just be careful what ya download, though you all might want to stick to the virus scanner but you'll notice a big difference in switching to another browser for your spyware issues. http://www.mozilla.org http://www.opera.com
You may be forgeetting about msblaster, which spread by using an RPC vulnerability... only fixable by a Windows Update (or having a firewall, NAT or otherwise, or not running Windows). virus scanning software is always good to have, "just incase". Kind of like using forged pistons in a stock-type rebuild.
The only viri I had were nimda and Code Red - worms that didn't need M$IE. I started using a firewall after that. I never have (still don't) use antivirus software. On Windoze I've been using Firefox since it was 0.5 (Phoenix then). I've been using Linux almost exclusively for a year and a half now - don't think I could get infected if I wanted to.
