Just charged my A/C thinking it was not going to work but it blows COLD-works great. Only thing is compressor clutch engages when you turn on the fan motor-Heat, Vent, A/C, all engage the compressor. Turn the fan off and the compressor cuts off. Is this normal?? I thought the function, A/C, D-ice etc.. would control engage the compressor.

    Thanks-Chris

    A-body or large car?
Two different system, each operate differently too.
The A-body requires the fan on at least one notch before it will allow the compressor to engage. Micro-switch built into the controls.
Chassis Manual has some very good schematics for both power & vacuum.
The large body cars I'm not sure on but if you get stuck send me your e-mail. Buick issued a Dealer Service Bulletin for the '71 specific large cars. The Chassis Manual drawings are incorrect.

Hey Steve-'71 A body. Fan switch turns on the compressor. It turns on in any mode-heat, vent, recirculate, defrost and a/c. I didn't know if the system worked this way and you controlled the temperature with the slide or if I may have a bad switch.

Thanks Steve for sending me the pages from the manual and the system diagrams. Now I know how to tackle this.

If anyone needs a copy I will be happy to forward! :TU:

What did you find? I am in the process of restoring the A/C on my '71 Skylark.
