I see these ads on tv for companies that will buy your structured settlements so that u have cash in hand.
The question is - what percentage of the settlement will u actually receive? 60%, 70% ?

    Some jurisdictions prohibit this.

This is where we need government oversight. Loan's in general. We actually do need to be protected from ourself / ignorence.

TexasT Texas, where are you from

I would bet it is substantially less than 50%. Read that fine print and get someone else to look it over before you sign that coin away.

No share for them. They clearly have enough.

I was thinking it was probably the same as ambulance chasing lawyers. 33% + expences

I'd rather have a regular monthly or yearly payment that's guaranteed for X number of years, than one lump sum of perhaps 50% of settlement value. I suspect most people who take these blow the money very quickly on stupid stuff.

From the commercial: “in exchange for some, OR ALL of your future payments...”
Riiiiiight... I’m gonna sign over the rest of my future lottery payments because I overspent on Buick parts this month. Where do I sign?

If it were not for their legal counsel who you reference in such a way, so many were have never recovered a dime from the insurance carrier on the risk.

In you field, HVAC, I have seen companies charge several hundred dollars for a starting capacitor that you can buy for less the $20.00. Labor was an additional amount. And I am just getting started.

This is the very reason that most legal counsel I know counsel their clients to accept most of any recovery in one or more annuities. We even have these annuities bid out so the client will obtain the best deal possible.

I'll be at your house in 1 hour or less and replace that cap for 125.00. Cap =20$, having the know how, tools , state license and exp to know whats wrong and parts on hand to fix it is priceless. Just because you are hot and uncomfortable dose not mean I need to work for free.

If there is a recovery for personal injury a provision of the IRS code exempts the recovery from income tax. I do not know what an assignee who buys an annuity from personal injury victim cases incurs for tax. At some point he must. It is complicated because many of these annuities are not bought with the guarantee of payments for a period certain. You can get it structured this way, but it diminishes the periodic payments. So the buyer of the annuity is often betting against the accuracy of the “rated age” he obtained for the victim. Until the victim passes you could not determine what if anything was made on the purchase of what is really an asset. Sometimes they would lose money and suffer a loss.

    That's enough guys...

There are scumbags in every profession, that rip folks off every chance they get. Folks who think they are entitled to as much money as they can suck out of a situation. For whatever reason. I don't give a rat's ass if you sat it in law school for 5 years, or have been fixing ac units for 30 years,, the job at hand is worth a reasonable return, and no more. Some members of every profession don't see it that way, they see people in need as an opportunity to enrich themselves.

That does not mean that they all are that way, and I don't believe either of you guys are that way.

So let's not deride entire professions here... because you guys are smarter than this.. you know the deal... let's keep that nonsense on facebook.
