Column Shifter Handle and Tilt Column Concerns

I have my Tilt assembly for my 72 all back together after being color coated to match my interior. It really looks great, perfect match. It looks great with the new Sport Wheel too. I just can't get comfortable in an A Body Car unless I can click the wheel up a couple of notches. I'm pretty sure it's back together correctly and I had it together and apart about 4 different times. I have done a few of these in the past and they have never given me as much trouble as this one has. I'm pretty sure I have the top bearing and spring parts in correctly but if anyone has a picture from a Service Manual they can Post I would greatly appreciate it, so I can double check my assembly.

I have also found out that a Tilt Column and a Standard Column shifter handles are different on the ends where they go into the shifter bowl. Either that or the 71 and 72 shifter handles are not the same on the shifter bowl end. I wanted to use my nice original Shifter Handle off my 32k original mile car and not the one from the used Tilt Column I purchased with the worn out plastic chrome on the Handle but they are different. Is it possible to just swap out the chrome and black plastic handle end itself? If so, what's the best way to remove them and swap them over without damaging them?

    Thank You for any help,
    Dom

Tilt and non-tilt use different gear shift levers....as you found out.
You can swap the ends but it takes some effort and you may damage the knob. It is pressed on the lever which has a splined end.

Did you see the article on the site below showing how to redo the tilt columns?? That should have all the pictures you need.

Thanks George, I've always messed with Floor Shift Tilt Columns, this is my first column shift one. I thought the lever knob may be splined like the Turn Signal Lever and Tilt Lever but wasn't sure, thanks. I guess I can try and take the good one off the other handle first and then it won't matter if I mess up the one that's on the car now. I've never seen the Article on Columns but I'll look for it.

    Thank You

Thanks a bunch George and thanks for the help with a Tilt Lever too.

I drove it around the block today and it all seemed fine and nice and tight too :)
