Ok, what color are the stock 15/16" front sway bar bushing brackets? Black, natural steel or plated?

    Scott,

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question as I have asked it as well on this site before. FYI, I have seen the brackets plated yellow zinc and have also have found them painted cast grey or black. It appears there is confliciting information as to how they should be restored.

My hunch is that they were bare steel and not painted from the factory. This assumption is based on looking at several brackets where I have found little evidence suggesting they were painted or plated from the factory.

I"m looking forward to getting the correct answer from someone who really knows.....

The brackets were black, and may have been plated black phosphate like the bolts.
I probably will get quizzed on this too.

Rule of thumb was most steel parts were painted black and cast parts were natural cast color. No steel parts were painted cast.

I don't think I can remember ever seeing them black on a restored car!!!! (At least among those pics posted on here. I'll leave lying on my back at the Nats to Duane :) ) I thought for sure they were silver zinc...?????

Thanks for the info. After removing several brackets on junkyard cars this weekend, the inside of the bracket seems to be natural steel? I too have seen them painted black on many restored cars, but I can't believe that the factory would leave them natural as they would rust very quickly.

    Scott,
I agree, there is no way the factory left them unpainted, it would have looked horrible when the cars were still sitting on the lot. The assembly manuals state to leave that area unpainted when building the chassis, therefore the only explanation was they were painted BEFORE they got to the assembly plants.

    Duane,

I was even thinking that they might have just painted the outside during assembly, but what you said makes sense. Thanks.

if it means anything in co-realating to the a-body buicks (70-72) , the front swaybar brackets of my 70 chevelle were painted black . the new brackets that i purchased for my 72 gs 4 years ago, are anodized .
