72 pet chicken i dont wanna be a pirate!

was driving home yesterday on the freeway in my 72 lark 350 and i went to accelerate and nothing... a couple seconds later the engine starts to stumble pretty bad. just about every 3 or 4 seconds. so i drive about another mile to the next exit and its clicking really loud. almost sounds like a deisle engine. drove like crap the rest of the way home and still now. any thoughts?

i dont think its an exaust leak. it sounds like its comming from the pass. side by the carb and head. could it be a lifter or something else in the valvetrain?

    hope its not too bad.

    First, check the simple stuff.
    Intake manifold gasket leak?
    Head gasket? Water in oil?
If not, then it's time to remove valve cover and inspect the rocker assembly. look at each rocker to see if the tabs on the valve side are still there. These tend to break off sometimes.
    How about a compression check?
Just some easy places to start.
    Good Luck!

run the engine without the valve cover and see that all the rockers are rockin'

think i got it workin now. changed the oil and it seems to be fine. i just got the car and it bummed me out for the weekend. when i emptied the oil only about 2 quarts came out. and it was blacker then night.

it still ticks a little but nothing compared to what it was. gonna take off the valve covers this weekend.
