Did I recall someone saying to put seat belts in a dishwasher to wash them? Anyone try this?

Hi Tim, I heard laundry detergent but I could be wrong. You just reminded me- I've had my arm rests soaking in laundry detergent and water since Monday! I better check tonight on them.

I always soak them in a pail of hot water and laundry detergent for a day, then a few thorough rinses and you're good to go. I've never tried a dishwasher. I'm afraid that would fall into the same category as baking freshly painted headers in the oven if I got caught

I had a full set of black seat belts in the dish washer; were very dirty (mud/tar/mold/rust stains) but cleaned up very well. After drying I sprayed a little WD40 in the buckles.

And there it is, Thanks Rob. I may just try that this weekend while the lady of the house is out at the hair dressers.....:Brow:

I'm also looking for two more deluxe seat belts complete, and also two front retractors in black if anyone has any extra's laying about...

The inside of the buckle mechanisms will rust if immersed in water. Better oil them fast.

Yup, I always take them apart first.

Hey Bill, How do you take apart a deluxe belt buckle? I have a bit of rust in there now and would like to clean them up. Secondly, I have a spare set of date code 1968 shoulder belts in black, if someone is looking for a pair.

I did both and got more flack for the headers in the new oven. BTW the belts didnt get much cleaner than they were before.

You just had to ask that question, didn't you Tim  You're stressing my memory out here so I'll have to dig one out. Once I have it in front of me I'll try to describe how to do it. I might not happen today, though.

Thanks Bill I'm curious too about how to disassemble. Last night, I asked my wife- are you ok with me sending the junk car's seat belts thru the dishwasher? and she said "yeah as long as it won't mess them up" She was referring to the seat belts! Damn I'm a lucky man....[IMG]

For cleaning you could get better results dipping the fabric in a bucket of warm water and simple green then scrubbing with a brush. Way more effective than a DW.

Ok, you asked so here it is. As you can see, I have already had these apart once, cleaned them, beadblasted the rusty parts and painted them with some Rustoleum to prevent further rust.

    1) Pry off the cover from the rear. Pry out from the bottom and it'll pop right up. BTW, this is the easier step
    2) Pry back on the latch until it pops up, remove the heavier piece, then slide out the retainer.
    3) Slip the end of the belt up through the slot.
    4) Slide the wedge assembly forward and out the end a bit, enough so you can pry out the wedge.
    5) Now you can finish pulling the belt out and remove the wedge retainer.

Disclaimer  This isn't as easy as it looks. The plastic buckles are a whole lot easier to take apart. Everything will come out but it has to come out a certain way so if this is your first time, practice your cuss words and have fun :) Each one will get a little easier.

Thanks Bill....No problem. I had the first one all apart in a minute. Now the clean up in there starts. I was amazed the rust inside there. Nothing big but I think with a little wire brush, I'll be ok. I guess you can't really oil anything, as the oil will either be on my seat or my lap.

I used Blue Coral carpet cleaner on mine and they actually turned out great. Mine were black mind you so it was probably easier than trying to clean another color. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_x_7040044-P_x_x?cm_mmc=ACQ-_-Google-_-enhancedRM-_-7040044&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=7040044&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}&gclid=CKfBpdn1hLYCFShgMgodb24ATw#utm_source=acq&utm_medium=google&utm_campaign=enhancedrm&utm_content=7040044
