I have a QJ that was purchased a couple of years ago from a rebuilder. It has been setting on a shelf wrapped in plastic. The carburetor has lost it shinny luster that it once had. How do I clean the outside of the carburetor to bring back some luster to it? Right now if I sit it on my painted engine it look kind of bad.

You can actually by a special carb spray paint that will give the gold tinted color back. It can be found at Summit and other mail order catalogs as well as NAPA. Don't know how well it holds up though. Had my carb cleaned and rebuilt and it now has the same problem. There are places that do the refinish but they are not cheap.

First Guess: It's not a matter of "cleaning"; it's a matter of having to get the castings re-plated. The solvents used to clean a carb along with years of using the carb will tend to damage the plating.

Paint is a short-term solution; most painted carbs look very silly, and paint ends up on the intake manifold as soon as the gasoline seepage begins to attack the outside of the carb.
