I think as recently as 5 years ago, it was a truism to say that with aftermarket support that Chev or Ford were the least expensive to build and were most valuable. I just don't see it. I'm building my 50 to compete with current Chev/Ford offerings, but the cost to compete is pretty much a wash - except I don't have to bury money in an expensive shell.

Quality work is always appreciated - thus, when it comes time to get as much of your money as possible; I think it's easier with the less desired brands than the expensive ones. Price a hypothetical 1969 Camaro vs. a 1970 GSX. End of the day, they're worth about the same at auction, but you'll find far more GS(X) type cars around than you will 1969 Camaros, and the odds of finding a deal on a Buick is infinitely higher.

So no, I don't agree with your premise, I think it was true 5 years ago; but with current parts availability - nope, what you don't make it highest dollar you make in percentage of money spent to money realized on sale.

Add to that, within the subset of 50s cars, Buick tend to be more available - and give people who want a blank canvas something to work from. You can't buy a junk 49 Merc, but Buick (especially Sedanettes) have become increasingly popular among the low crowd.

I happen to like 4 doors...my little 46 Super is an original 4 door; - same paint, same engine, never been pulled apart sort of car that unfortunately isn't worth a tinker's cuss in this market. I love the car, but haven't got a clue as to what to do with it. It'll need some serious work one day, but it doesn't have enough value to justify it. Until then, I guess I'll just drive it and enjoy it.

I guess the bottom line here is it's just a hobby, so price and cost is essentially no object; if a guy likes the car, he'll pay just about anything for it. It's just too bad that a 57 Chevy with indiferent build quality goes for a lot more than a better built and more luxurious Buick.
