My choke flap doesn't ever want to close, and as a result, the car is difficult to get started when cold. The carb has been rebuilt, and there is a new choke thermostat as well. Even in trying to set up the choke, it won't close for cold start up. Any thoughts? Could the choke coil still be faulty? Motor is bone stock 350, Rochester 2bbl. Thanks,
It sounds like the linkage on the choke (flap) and/or coil spring is either incorrectly connected or incorrectly adjusted. If it won't close the linkage is binding somewhere. Depress the accelerator cable slightly to release the choke cam linkage and try to wiggle the choke valve by hand, then work your way back.
Lee, is right. If the engine is cold, and the choke is corrected correctly and adjusted correctly, the choke flap on top should be partially closed at least, if not all the way closed. When the engine starts and warms up, it should push the rod up and open the air flap fully. Is the flap sticking? and stuck open? If not, work on the adjustments with your rod placement or by bending the rod some if necessary.
OK, it's been a while, but, I've discovered that the choke coil wasn't pushing the rod up to close the flap at all. I reinstalled the old one, which I thought was shot, but seems to be ok. Should I now adjust it so that the flap closes completely, or almost closes? Thanks again,
completely closed when cold. Once the engine fires, the vacuum will activate a mechanism of some sort to open the flap a small bit to let the engine breathe. what number is your carb?
Thanks guys, I think I've got it adjusted better. Numbers on the carb are: 7040148, then below: 162ONE1.
